The regular season in college football has come to an end. At a lavish award ceremony, USC quarterback Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy while new Hall of Famers were recognized.
The brief break gives teams a chance to take stock and prepare for the battles that lie ahead, but who has fared best in 2022 and who needs to do better?
As they head into the playoffs, TCU are looking like the team to beat. Whatever happens in the postseason, the Horned Frogs can look back on what has been an impressive campaign to date.
What’s even more remarkable is the fact that the players and the coach have turned things around from the previous campaign. After finishing 2021 with a disappointing 5-7 record, new coach Sonny Dykes stepped in to mastermind the transformation.
Equally influential in the Horned Frogs’ impressive season was quarterback Max Duggan who made it to the Heisman Trophy finals.

Key to their success was quarterback Hendon Hooker and, had it not been for his unfortunate ACL injury, Tennessee may have gone even deeper.
One team who have underperformed in 2022 are the Texas Aggies. Two years of progression hinted at a productive year and a place in the playoffs by the time December rushed in.
In 2020, Texas A&M finished 9-1 overall. That had dipped to 8-4 a year ago but much was expected this time around. Instead, a 6-7 reverse included a six-game losing streak that ran through October and November. While they’d been building a platform, the Aggies have dropped to the floor once again.
The majority of college teams would have been happy with a 10-2 overall record. For the Alabama Crimson Tide, however, their absence in the postseason playoffs represents a failure.
The standout player in the roster was the quarterback Bryce Young, but he did appear to be carrying the team at times. While they lost to LSU and Tennessee on the road, another concern will be the fact that some of their wins were by the barest margins.
Legendary coach Nick Saban remains in charge, but he will expect more from the Crimson Tide in 2023. Their inclusion here may seem harsh, but there are issues within the team and that 10-2 record arguably flatters Alabama at the end of a difficult regular season.
