Who Is on Course for Being the Number One Pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?

November 10, 2020 by Staff

We are midway through the NCAAF season and we have seen enough football now to make an accurate projection about who is going to be bidding for the number one overall slot in the 2021 NFL Draft.

All 32 teams will be monitoring the action in the NCAAF and are likely to already have highlighted players who could improve their rosters next season.

Here are three players who have a great chance of being the first player off the board in April.

Trevor Lawrence

Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson have wasted no time becoming huge stars in the NFL and the next exciting young quarterback who could join that list in the near future is Trevor Lawrence.

Many pundits in the sport consider the Clemson Tigers QB to be the best quarterback in college football right now. With so many teams expected to be in the market for a future franchise quarterback next year, it increases the chances of Lawrence being drafted first.

Lawrence will be hoping he can lead his side to the NCAAF Championship in his final year in college football. The Tigers have American football odds of +150 to prevail for the second time in three years. This would be a great way to cap off what has been a brilliant three years for the youngster at Clemson.

Justin Fields

Another quarterback who is being talked about as being in contention for the number one pick in the NFL Draft in 2021 is Justin Fields. The Ohio State Buckeyes QB threw 41 touchdown passes in 2019 where he led his team to a 13-1 record. He has already made an impressive start in 2020 across his opening three matches.

Not only has Field got a strong arm, like many of the successful QBs in the NFL today, but he can also use his legs to get out of trouble.

Naturally, all of Field's stats are being compared to Lawrence’s. Last season, the Ohio State QB had five more touchdowns than his rival but, also, his passing completion percentage was 67.2%, higher than Lawrence’s 65.8%.

If Fields does miss out on the top spot in the draft in April, he won’t have to wait much longer to be selected as there is sure to be a long list of NFL teams keen on the athletic QB.

Penei Sewell

The best defensive player likely to be available in the NFL Draft in 2021 is Penei Sewell. Oregon Ducks’ defensive tackle won a number of awards last year in his sophomore year.

Unfortunately, we are not able to see more of Sewell this year as he has opted out of his junior season in 2020. He has declared his intention to stand for the next draft and he is expected to have a huge future in the NFL.

Myles Garret in 2017 was the last defensive player to be the first overall pick and Sewell will be hoping to follow in the Cleveland Brown star’s footsteps.

Next year’s NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 29 and will take place in Cleveland, Ohio.
