What Makes the Detroit Lions the Best Team In the NFL?

December 18, 2024 by Staff

It has been quite a turnaround at the Detroit Lions as they have gone from a franchise that ended the 2021/22 season with a 3-13 record to now being the best team in the NFL. Here is a look at what has been behind that change in fortune.

Dan Campbell Has Stuck with His Philosophy

Former tight end Dan Campbell was hired by the Detroit Lions in 2021 to put an end to their miserable run in the league. After winning just three games in the opening season, many felt the franchise would part ways with his services.

However, the Lions stuck with their head coach, and earlier this year they handed him a new contract. The franchise is now getting its reward for sticking by Campbell following his tough opening year. After going 12-2 through their opening 14 games this season, Detroit is the +400 favorite in the Super Bowl 2025 odds.

The NFC North team is +200 in the American football betting for the NFC Championship. They will be hoping to secure the number one seed in the conference to make their path to the Super Bowl as easy as possible.

Campbell’s team lost the NFC Championship game to the San Francisco 49ers last season. He will have learned a lot about that experience. The 48-year-old, who is in his first job as a head coach in the NFL, looks to be on course to be named the Coach of the Year this season.

Offense That Is Firing on All Cylinders

With 459 points, no team has scored my points than the Lions after 14 games of the 2024/25 NFL season. Quarterback Jared Goff has been at the top of his game and the NFC North leaders have been clinical in offense.

Although they suffered defeat in arguably the match of the season against the Buffalo Bills in week 15, Detroit scored 42 points in that game. Goff ended the game with 494 passing yards and five passing touchdowns.

Two-time Pro Bowler Amon-Ra St. Brown is another player in the Lions’ offense who is excelling this season. The wide receiver is on course for his best year in the NFL. He has picked up 95 receptions after 14 games, with only the Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase having more to his name.

Defense Playing Their Role in Team’s Success

Detroit has also been involved in some low-scoring games this season where their defense has played a huge part in the victory. They conceded just six points in victories over the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars, with neither of those two teams being able to break them down.

The Lions are coached on defense by the excellent Aaron Glenn. The former cornerback has been able to galvanize an inexperienced team to produce some huge performances, despite injuries to key players. His play calling has also ensured his team is well prepared to stop the opposition in some big moments in a game.

Detroit will be hoping the season ends with the Vince Lombardi Trophy in their hands on February 9 following Super Bowl LIX.
