Wekend Recap: Three Top-6 Teams In Playoff Rankings Go Down To Defeat

November 6, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

The first week of college football, post playoff committee rankings, is in the books and the mayhem has begun. On Saturday, the number 1, 4 and 6 teams all went down to defeat.  It was the first loss of the year for both Tennessee and Clemson, but Alabama has now lost two games by a total of four points.

Tennessee went to Georgia and ran into the devil who played the Vols like a fiddle. The 'Dawgs played stout defense throughout and established a 24-6 halftime lead en route to the 27-13 victory in rainy Athens.  Hendon Hooker was held to 193 yards passing, 0 TD's, 1 INT and just 17 yards rushing. His counterpart, Stetson Bennett, threw for 257, 2 TD's, and 0 INT's. Bennett also started Georgia's scoring with a 13-yard rushing score.

Clemson went to Notre Dame where Touchdown Jesus wouldn't grant the Tigers one until they trailed 28-0 and nearly and only 10:14 remained to be played. The final result was 35-14 as Marcus Freeman's Irish improved to 6-3. The Irish have now won 8 straight over ACC teams since last losing to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game in 2020. The loss also ended the Tigers' 14-game winning streak. Still, it wasn't a completely bad day for Clemson as the team clinched the ACC Atlantic by default when Syracuse lost to Pittsburgh. And it might be a little too early to count Dabo Swinney's team completely out of the playoff picture.

Alabama visited LSU and saw yet another storming of the field in the aftermath of the dramatic 32-31 overtime win by the Bayou Bengals. Brian Kelly, the former Notre Dame head coach who is in his first year in Baton Rouge, used guts and execution to get the win as he opted to go for two in the first extra stanza and converted.  The game produced six lead changes and a tie. It was LSU's first win at home over Alabama since 2011. The Tide drop to 7-2 over-all and 4-2 in the western division with the loss, while LSU improves to 7-2 over-all and 5-1 in the division.

Five other teams ranked in the committee's Top 25 also went down to defeat.

No. 13 Kansas State lost 34-27 at home to No. 24 Texas.

A Michigan State team without several suspended players was able to deal No. 16 Illinois a 23-15 loss in Champaign.

No. 18 Oklahoma State 37-16 at Kansas as the Jayhawks became bowl eligible for the first time since 2008.

No. 20 Syracuse fell 19-9 at Pitt. It's the third straight loss for the Orange after opening 6-0.

And last but not least, No. 21 Wake Forest was handed its second straight loss with a 30-21 defeat at NC State.

Meanwhile, Ohio State battled nasty wins in Evanston and only managed a 21-7 win over a Northwestern team that was a nearly 40-point underdog.

No. 5 Michigan didn't get rolling at Rutgers until the Scarlet Knights threw picks on consecutive possessions in the 3rd quarter to turn a 21-17 deficit into a 35-17 score. Michigan trailed 17-14 at the half but won 52-17.

No. 7 TCU trailed 17-13 at the start of the 4th quarter to Texas Tech, but won 34-24 in Fort Worth.

In PAC-12 games, No. 8 Oregon decimated Colorado 49-10, No. 9 USC held off a late surge by Cal and won 41-35 in L.A., No. 12 UCLA pocketed a 50-36 win at Arizona State, and No. 14 Utah was a 45-20 winner over Arizona in Salt Lake City. The Ducks are 6-0 in the conference. The other three each have a PAC-12 loss with USC falling to Utah, the Utes to the Bruins, and UCLA to the Ducks

Commander-In-Chief's Trophy

Over a month before Army plays Navy, the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy has already been secured by Air Force. The Falcons defeated Navy 13-7 in Arlington on Saturday, and beat Navy 13-10 on October 1. The coveted hardware goes to one of those three military academies that wins the annual round-robin competition between themselves.

It was first awarded in 1972 and Air Force has won the trophy 21 times to Navy's 16 and Army's 9. It's been shared 5 times.

140

That's the number of points SMU and Houston combined to score in the Mustangs' 77-63 victory in Dallas. It's the most combined points in a 4-quarter FBS game, eclipsing the previous mark of 137 set by Pitt and Syracuse in 2016 with Pitt's 76-61 win.

SMU led 56-35 at the half as Tanner Mordecai threw 7 first-half TD passes and finished with 9.

Houston's Clayton Tune tossed for 7 TD's and ran for another.

Three Words You Won't Hear Arkansas Fans Say in the Near Future - "Give Me Liberty"

Liberty improved to 8-1 with a 21-19 win at Arkansas. Liberty staked out a 21-0 first-half lead and was held scoreless the rest of the way.

The Razorbacks looked like they had tied with 1:11 left, but the 2-point conversion was reviewed and subsequently nullified as the players' knee was down before the ball crossed. Liberty's top rusher, Dae Dae Hunter, left the game with an apparent knee injury after rushing for 29 yards in the game to push his season total to 854 with 8 TD's.

The Flames could easily improve on their 10-1 record in the 2020 Covid season as they finish with home games against a struggling Virginia Tech team and a woeful New Mexico State squad after visiting UConn this coming Saturday. They would be 11-1 with wins in all three.

Elsewhere

Duke became bowl eligible in Mike Elko's first season as head coach with the Blue Devils' 38-31 win at Boston College on Friday night.

Virginia Tech blew a 27-16 fourth quarter lead and lost 28-27 at home to Georgia Tech. This disappointing loss came at home in Lane Stadium, a week after the Hokies blew a 21-3 lead at NC State and lost 22-21. Turnovers caused this one after penalties did them in at Raleigh. Brent Pry's first season as head coach is turning into a disaster with a 6-game skid that ironically is the program's longest losing streak since Frank Beamer's first season in 1987.

Speaking of Beamer, his son Shane has South Carolina bowl eligible at 6-3 after a 38-27 win at Vanderbilt.

Minnesota Mohamed Ibrahim ran for 128 yards and 2 scores in a 20-13 comeback win at Nebraska. He now has 17 straight games in which he has ran for at least 102 yards.

Florida State continued Miami's misery with a 45-3 beatdown in South Florida. The 'Canes drop to 4-5 with the loss and 2-3 in the ACC. FSU became bowl eligible at 6-3 over-all and and improved to 4-3 in league play.

Auburn pushed Mississippi State to the limit in Starkville in its first game under interim head coach Carnell "Cadillac" Williams. The former star RB of Auburn took over after Bryan Harsin was fired last Monday.  The Tigers rallied from a 24-3 deficit to seize leads of 25-24 and 33-30 in the 4th quarter, but couldn't close the deal as the Bulldogs prevailed 39-33 in overtime.

Interim head coaches are 16-21 so far in 2022 after going 2-6 this week. Georgia Tech's Brent Key and Wisconsin's Jim Leonhard were the only winners.

BYU ended a 4-game losing streak with a 31-28 upset at Boise State (6-3). The Cougars need to win one of their last two games to become bowl eligible after the beginning the year as dark horse candidates for a final four slot in the playoff. BYU hosts FCS member Utah Tech after a bye week and finishes the season at Stanford.
