Weekend Recap - Vols Romp, Buckeyes Rally, Wolverines Win, Horned Frogs Crush Cowboys

October 30, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

The FBS college football weekend had a modest 12 outright upsets against the odds established by the sportsbooks, but the biggest and most unexpected result came from Manhattan, Kansas where the Kansas State Wildcats lassoed, roped, and tied the Oklahoma State Cowboys 48-0. The victory was 46.5 points greater than the 1.5-point spread.

Oklahoma State was last held to fewer than 10 points in 2014 when it happened twice that year by TCU and Texas. The last time the Cowboys were held scoreless was 11/28/2009 by Oklahoma 27-0.

The biggest upset of the day, in terms of sheer numbers between the odds and the outcome, was Charlotte's 56-23 stroll at Rice as a 16.5-point underdog. That represents a 49.5-point flip of the spread. The 49ers had just fired head coach Will Healy 6 days earlier, giving interim head coach Pete Rossomando the win in his debut.

Wake Forest took the hit for the biggest upset victim among ranked teams. The Demon Deacons, ranked 10th in the AP Poll, had 8 turnovers in the second half while Louisville scored 35 points in the 3rd quarter en route to a 48-21 loss as a 5.5-point favorite.

Syracuse entered its home game against Notre Dame as the No. 16 team in the AP Poll, but the Orange were juiced 41-24 by 3-point underdog Notre Dame.

South Carolina, ranked 25th in the AP Poll, bowed 23-10 at home to Missouri as a 4.5-point favorite.

Here are the other 8 upsets:
- Louisiana (-1) fell 39-24 at Southern Miss,
- BYU (-3) lost 27-24 at home to East Carolina,
- Louisiana Tech (-6.5) bowed 42-34 in OT at FIU,
- UAB (-5) lost 24-17 at Florida Atlantic,
- Texas Tech (-2.5) was whipped 45-17 at home by Baylor,
- Marshall (-2) fell 24-13 at home to Coastal Carolina,
- UTEP (-1) lost 24-13 at home to MTSU,
- Western Kentucky (-10) was dropped 40-13 at home by North Texas.

Tennessee Flexes Muscle On Defense, Destined For No. 1 Ranking

Tennessee showed up and showed out on both sides of the ball in 44-6 blowout of Kentucky. The impressive performance did nothing to hurt quarterback Hendon Hooker's Heisman bid and likely cemented the Vols as the No. 1 team in the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee which will release its first rankings of the season on Tuesday night.

It as Tennessee's 5th win over a team that was ranked at the time the game took place.

Elsewhere

Trailing 21-16, Ohio State had to rally in the 4th quarter to a 44-31 win at Penn State. Meanwhile, Georgia ho-hummed its way to an expected 42-20 win over Florida in Jacksonville, and Michigan was solid in its 29-7 Paul Bunyan Trophy game win against Michigan State while Alabama and Clemson were among the 36 teams with a bye week.

Projected Playoff Committee's Top 4

If the committee bases its initial rankings on nothing but each teams' body of work, this is what we expect to see:

1. Tennessee
2. TCU
3. Ohio State
4. Georgia
First two out: Michigan and Alabama
Next two out: Clemson and Oregon

However, if the committee gets too deep into some combination of factors, TCU could be outside the top 4 with Michigan in. We would still expect the Vols to be No. 1, but perhaps with Georgia 2, Ohio State 3 and Michigan 4.

But we honestly don't know how you can NOT take Tennessee-TCU as 1-2 as the Vols have played 5 ranked teams and the Horned Frogs have played 4 in-a-row.

FCS vs. FBS

There will be 119 FBS vs. FCS matchups this season with App State, Army and Marshall each playing two such games, and 116 other FBS schools playing one apiece.

Only one such game took place this week as Appalachian State cruised to a 42-3 win over Robert Morris.

Lamar visits New Mexico State on November 12, and the final FBS-FCS matchups occur on November 19 with Austin Peay at Alabama, Utah Tech at BYU, ETSU at Mississippi State, and North Alabama at Memphis.

The FBS is 106-8 vs. the FCS this year, and 1,680-148 (.919) since we began tracking this in 2003.
