Week 5 FBS Recap: Three Top 10 Teams Fall, Including the Top 'Dawgs

September 29, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

There you have it - the upset weekend we've been waiting for to stir the pot and mix things up a bit. Using the AFCA Coaches' Poll as our guide, the Nos. 1, 5 and 10 teams all went down to defeat in upsets, while Nos. 17, 20 and 21 joined them in outcomes that were expected.

No. 1 Georgia fell 41-34 at No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 Ole Miss was toasted 20-17 at home by Kentucky, and No. 10 Utah was a 23-10 loser at home to Arizona. The Bulldogs were favored by just 1.5, but the Rebels were 15.5-point favorites and the Utes had a 7.5-point line.

The weekly picks, based on the FBS Congrove Computer Rankings, had 'Bama outright, but they also had Ole Miss and Utah exceeding the spread.

Still, the computer correctly picked these upsets, (home team in CAPS):

ALABAMA by 3.37 over Georgia (-1.5). Alabama won 41-34.
WYOMING by 7.69 over Air Force (-3.5). Wyoming won 31-19.
Oklahoma by 3.07 over AUBURN (-2). Oklahoma won 27-21.
Brigham Young by 3.08 over BAYLOR (-3.5). BYU won 34-28.
FIT by 8.02 over Louisiana Tech (-2.5). FIT won 17-10.
Georgia Southern by 0.50 over GEORGIA STATE (-3.5). Georgia Southern won 38-21.
Louisiana by 0.56 over WAKE FOREST (-3.5). Louisiana won 41-38

As for the other Top 25 victims, No. 17 Louisville's 31-24 loss was at No. 14 Notre Dame, No. 20 Oklahoma State's 42-20 loss was at No. 25 Kansas State, and No. 21 Illinois' 21-7 loss was at No. 8 Penn State.

The Georgia-Alabama could wind up being the first of three we'll have this year. It's not unlikely they could meet in the SEC Championship game, as well as the College Football Playoff. Saturday's contest seemed like two games within itself as 'Bama could do no wrong in the first half and opened a 30-7 lead, but Georgia came storming back and was briefly ahead 34-33. But then a pair of freshmen took over and saved the day as 17-year-old Ryan Williams responded to the Bulldogs' lead by scoring on a 75-yard pass reception on the next play. And with under a minute to go, Zabien Brown picked off Carson Beck's pass in the endzone to preserve the 41-34 win.

Georgia's loss ended winning streaks of 42 straight conference games and 16 true road wins. The Bulldogs still own a 26-game home winning streak, but Georgia now 45-3 since 2021 and all 3 losses are to their biggest SEC rival. Of course it was a huge win for Kalen DeBoer who replaced Nick Saban and would have been crucified if the 49-year-old head coach had completely blown the 23-point lead AND lost, but he was saved by 17-year-old Williams and 19-year-old Brown.

Oklahoma trailed 21-10 in the 4th before rallying for the 27-21 win, ignited by Kip Lewis' 61-yard interception return when the Tigers were driving to extend their 21-16 lead.

Ole Miss missed wide left on a 48-yard field gaol with under a minute to play as Kentucky beat the Rebels in Oxford for the first time since 1978.

in other games....

Boise State's Ashton Jeanty run for 259 yards on 26 carries and score 4 touchdowns in a 45-24 home win over Washington State. The nation's leading rusher has 845 yards (211.33 per game) and 13 touchdowns in 4 games

Colorado went to Orlando and took the bounce out of the Bounce House with a 48-21 win over UCF as a 12.5-point underdog. Travis Hunter had a TD reception and an interception, and we find it hard to believe that he isn't everybody's Heisman favorite if the award is, indeed, supposed to go the best football player, and not automatically defaulted to the quarterback of a blueblood team.

Michigan won its 27 straight conference game with a 27-24 victory over Minnesota to keep the Little Brown Jug. It's the same score that Michigan won by last week when the Wolverines knocked off USC. In the four Michigan wins, the team has scored 30 vs. Fresno State, 28 vs. Arkansas State, and 27 vs. USC and Minnesota. The Wolverines, who have played their first five games at home, head to Washington this coming Saturday.

Duke was down 20-0 at home to North Carolina in the 3rd quarter, but rallied to win 21-20 to end a 5-game losing streak in the series and claim the Victory Bell.

On Friday, Virginia Tech was hosed on a walk-off Hail Mary touchdown call at Miami that was reversed after several minutes of review. The 'Canes stay unbeaten with the 38-34 escape. The Hokies have had no luck this year, and are a total of 3 minutes and 47 seconds from potentially being 5-0.

Washington was 1-of-4 on field goals as Rutgers beat the Huskies 21-18 on Friday night.

Sam Houston State had a 25-yard walk-off field goal for a 40-39 upset of Texas State in Houston. The Bearkats just moved up the FBS last year.

A late INT helped prevent BYU from blowing a pair of 21-point leads as the Cougars held on for the 34-28 win at Baylor. BYU is now 5-0 over-all and 2-0 in the Big 12.

Boston College scored the final 14 points of the game to avoid the home upset loss, edging Western Kentucky 21-20. Grayson James led the comeback as Thomas Castellanos sat out from an injury suffered in last week's 4-point win over Michigan State.

Iowa State won 20-0 at Houston and the Cougars are now 1-4 and been held scoreless in the last two games. The Houston offense scored 33 in the win over Rice, but a total of just 19 points in the 4 losses.

The weekend began with Hurricane Helene making landfall on Thursday night at Florida's Big Bend and quickly raced northward leaving a wake of destruction with wind and high surf flood damage in Florida, and severe flash flooding in areas of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia.

Somehow, the storm caused the cancellation of only one FBS game as App State called off the game against Liberty and said it will not be rescheduled.

FBS vs. FCS

Only 3 FBS-FCS games were played over the weekend with the FBS schools going 2-1. The winner was UT-Martin, which was actually a slight favorite over brand new FBS member Kennesaw and prevailed 24-13.

FBS schools are 108-6 in such games this season, and a collective 1,908-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there are 121 scheduled scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.

2024 FCS wins vs. FBS:
August 24: Montana State 35, New Mexico 31
September 7: St. Francis (PA) 23, Kent State 17
September 7: Idaho 17, Wyoming 13
September 7: Southern Utah 27, UTEP 24 (OT)
September 21: Monmouth 45, FIU 42
September 28: UT-Martin 24, Kennesaw 13

In 2023, FBS schools were 114-4. These were the FCS wins last year:
September 9: Idaho 33, Nevada 6
September 9: Southern Illinois 14, Northern Illinois 12
September 9: Fordham 40, Buffalo 37
September 16: Sacramento State 30, Stanford 23
