Arizona and Boston College were the only Top 25 teams in the AP Poll that lost over the weekend, with the 'Cats getting spanked by the 'Cats on the home team at Kansas State, 31-7, and BC falling-from-ahead at Missouri 27-21. Arizona was ranked No. 20 and the Eagles were No. 24.
The AFCA Coaches' Poll had Arizona at No. 18 and BC un-ranked. But it had Washington at No. 22 and the Huskies were upset 24-19 by Washington State, 24-19 in Seattle in an early season edition of the Apple Cup.
The Civil War rivalry also took place with Oregon retaining the Platypus Trophy after the 49-14 demolition of the Oregon State Beavers' dam.

Among the top-ranked teams, another group of Wildcats came close to pulling off the biggest upset of the weekend as Kentucky gave Georgia all it wanted. Alas, the 'Dawgs got the best of the 'Cats and escaped with a few scratch marks but a 13-12 win. It was Georgia's 42nd straight regular season win and 16th consecutive road victory.
Texas lost QB Quinn Ewers to a strained abdomen in the second quarter of the home game with UTSA, but the Longhorns were able to turn to Arch Manning and finish the job with a 56-7 blowout. He had TD throws of 19, 51, 75 and 12 yards to four different receivers, and showed his wheels on a 67-yard touchdown run just two plays after the Roadrunners had cut the lead to 21-7 early in the 2nd quarter.
The biggest upset of the day saw Mississippi State fall to Toledo, 41-17, in Starkville as a 10.5-point favorite. The computer favored the Rockets by 3.05.
The college football weekend began on Thursday night with Arizona State rallying for a 31-28 win at Texas State, and South Alabama pumping out 87 points in an 87-10 romp over the Congrove Computer ratings bottom-ranked team in the FCS, Northwestern State (LA).
Arizona's loss at Kansas State came on Friday night, ending 'Zona's 9-game winning streak which had just become the longest such active streak after Michigan was rolled by Texas last weekend. A second game on Friday also involved a Kansas team as the Jayhawks fell 23-20 to UNLV in Kansas City. Kylin James scored from yard out on 4th-and-goal with 1:51 remaining in the game to end an 18-play, 75-yard drive that included just one pass attempt -- and the pass was incomplete.
Turning back to Saturday's games, South Carolina took a 17-0 lead on LSU and looked like it would cruise to a home win until the Gamecocks lost QB LaNorris Sellers to an ankle injury right before halftime. The offense stopped clicking, LSU stopped making big mistakes, and South Carolina made a costly one late in the game when a long interception return for a touchdown was called back for an extremely unnecessary blindside block on LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier which would have out them ahead by eleven. Instead, SC failed to move the ball, LSU got it back and scored the go-ahead TD with 1:12 left, and the Gamecocks barely hooked a 49-yard game-tying field goal attempt as time expired to allow the Bayou Bengals to leave Columbia with the 36-33 win.
In Knoxville, it looked like Tennessee would hand 100 on hapless Kent State as it was 65-0 at halftime. Being good sports, the Vols called off the bloodhounds in the second half and only added pair of field goals for the 71-0 win. Tennessee has outscored its first three opponents by a cumulative score of 191-13. As for Kent State, the Golden Flashes jump back into the fire again next week when a game at Penn State.
In some other games of note:
- Indiana handed UCLA a rude welcoming to the B1G by going to Pasadena and putting a 42-13 hurt on the Bruins.
- Florida State fell to 0-3 with a 20-12 home loss to head coach Mike Norvell's former team, the Memphis Tigers.
- Tulane went into Norman and put up a fight, but ultimately fell 34-19 to Oklahoma.
- UCF scored on a 20-yard pass from KJ Jefferson to Kobe Hudson with 36 seconds left to take its first lead and complete a rally from 21 down in the second half to upset TCU 35-34 in Fort Worth.
- Notre Dame recovered from the upset loss at home to Northern Illinois by going on the road and thrashing in-state foe Purdue, 66-7. It's a record for margin of victory in the series by either team, easily surpassing the previous record of 46 points in 1983 when the Irish won 52-6.
- Utah was a 38-21 winner over rival Utah State without QB Cam Rising who hurt a finger on his throwing hand when he was pushed into the coolers on the sideline in the second quarter of the win over Baylor a week ago.
- Vanderbilt, which upset Virginia Tech on opening weekend in Nashville, took its 2-0 record on the road and lost 36-32 at Georgia State.
- Virginia Tech, which oddly enough had never defeated Old Dominion at their place (0-2), pulled away in the second half for a 37-17 win over the Monarchs.
- Colorado recovered from the 28-10 loss at Nebraska by drubbing Colorado State 28-9 in the first game played in this rivalry on CSU's home field since 1996.
- Pittsburgh won the Backyard Brawl, 38-34, at home over West Virginia by scoring 14 unanswered points in the last 3:09 to take a 63-41-3 lead in the series. The Mountaineers had just finished a 17-0 run to go up 34-24 with 4:45 to play.
All 11 games played this week between FBS and FCS schools went to the FBS school to raise their record to 97-4 in such games this season, and a collective 1,897-156 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.
These were the FCS wins in 2023:
September 9: Idaho 33, Nevada 6
September 9: Southern Illinois 14, Northern Illinois 12
September 9: Fordham 40, Buffalo 37
September 16: Sacramento State 30, Stanford 23
In 2024, there are 121 scheduled scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.
This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.
