Week 10 FBS Recap: 7 Top 25 Teams Go Down To Defeat

November 5, 2023 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Oklahoma was the highest-ranked team in the College Football Playoff Committee Rankings to lose over the weekend. The No. 8 Sooners fell 27-24 at Oklahoma State as the Bedlam rivalry series came to, at least, a temporary end. It was the second straight loss for Oklahoma after beginning the season with 7 straight wins.

The Sooners were one of seven Top 25 teams to lose over the weekend.

No. 12 Missouri was the next-highest ranked team to falter, but a 30-21 loss at Georgia isn't likely to draw severe punishment.

It's the same deal with No. 14 LSU which faltered in the second half and lost 42-28 at Alabama as both quarterbacks played lights out. Unfortunately, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels may have seen the lights briefly go out as he was knocked out of the game with a concussion early in the 4th quarter. Daniels was 15-of-24 for 219 passing with 2 TD's and an INT. He added 163 rushing yards on 11 carries, including a 9-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter. Jalen Milroe for Alabama was 15-of-23 for 219 yards with 0 TD passes or INT's, but he scored 4 rushing touchdowns of 23, 4, 21, and 11 yards while gaining 155 yards on 20 carries.

No. 15 Notre Dame lost for the third time this season as Clemson earned Dabo Swinney a school record 166th win with the 31-23 victory. His teams have averaged 11.2 wins in his 14 full seasons (2009-2022).

No. 19 UCLA was dropped 27-10 at Arizona as both teams are now 6-3.

No. 20 USC was a 52-42 loser at home to Washington as the Trojans fell for the third time in the last four games while allowing an average of 45.75 points per game.

No. 23 Kansas State fell to 6-3 on an idiotic decision to eschew the game-tying field goal in overtime at Texas and go for the touchdown on 4th-and 4. No, that's not second-guessing. We were screaming at the monitors to "kick the da** field goal" for a few minutes while head coach Chris Klieman even called time out. We weren't rooting for anyone - it just made the most sense. Texas was handed a 33-30 win because of that mistake by the Wildcats who could have least gone to a second extra period and possibly forced a mistake by a faltering Longhorn offense. Texas was reeling after blowing a 27-14 lead in the 4th quarter after turning the ball over on consecutive possessions with an INT and a fumble. In case you didn't see the play, the Texas rush blew it up and Kansas State QB Will Howard wound up on his backside at the 17.

No. 25 Air Force was a huge unexpected loser, bowing 23-3 in Denver to rival Army. A victory by the Falcons would have clinched a second straight Commander-In-Chief's Trophy competition, and they were favored by 17.5 points to do just that. After all, Air Force came in to the game undefeated (8-0) while Army limped in at 2-6. The Falcons were also in the mix for the Group of Five conference's automatic bid to a New Year's Six bowl. Instead, the 37.5-point flip means the Black Knights can seize the trophy with a win over Navy on December 9, while a Midshipmen victory would allow the AFA to retain the trophy for another year since the Falcons had already win in Annapolis. Since its inception in 1972, the trophy has been won by Air Force for 21 years, compared to Navy's 16 and Army's 9. It has resided at Air Force for a total of 22 years, compared to 19 for Navy and just 10 for Army.

Top Teams Have Struggles

Some of the best teams fought through sluggish starts and preserved their unblemished record.

No. 1 Ohio State trailed 9-6 at the half to Rutgers, but rallied for a 35-16 win.

No. 2 Georgia was in a cat-and-dog chase with Missouri for most of the game, but a 4th quarter turnover by the Tigers helped the 'Dawgs secure a 30-21 win.

No. 3 Michigan didn't have any real trouble from Purdue in a 41-13 home win, but has plenty of issues off the field. In a move of guilty desperation, the Michigan has pleaded with the Big Ten not to issue any punishment until the NCAA finishes its investigation. A majority of conference head coaches want Michigan punished in the wake of tremendous evidence supporting the allegations of 'stealing signs". The man at the heart of the misdeeds, Wolverine staffer Connor Stalions, resigned this week and released a statement that head coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff were not aware of the "depth and breadth of the operation". Note that he did not say that they had NO knowledge of it. We will see how this plays out.

No. 4 Florida State was only up on Pitt by a 10-7 count at the half, but managed to pull out a 24-7 win. The 'Noles were missing top receivers Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman.

ACC Battle For Second

Louisville, for a second straight week, pounded a challenger bidding for a conference title shot against Florida State. The 'Noles secured their spot with Saturday's win at Pitt. The Cards moved a step closer to the other slot by cruising to a 34-3 win at home over Virginia Tech. Those two schools were the last remaining teams in the ACC with just a single conference loss. Louisville blanked Duke 23-0 a week prior.

Of the 16 FBS schools that do NOT play a FCS program, 7 are in the B1G (Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Purdue, Wisconsin). 6 more are evenly split between the Big 12 (Houston, Oklahoma, Texas) and Pac-12 (Colorado, USC, Washington). There will be 1 more on November 11, and the remaining 4 on November 18.

The FBS programs are 109-4 this year against the FCS schools. Over-all, the FBS is a collective 1,795-152 (.922) since we began tracking this in 2003.
