Upset Weekend Ahead? First Playoff Committee Rankings To Be Revealed Tuesday

October 27, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff and MaxwellFootballClub.org

The first College Football Playoff Committee Rankings of the 2022 season will be released next Tuesday which makes us wish there were more than 3 games this week that match AP-ranked Top 25 teams against each other this week

Dissecting the results of chaos is always fun.

There is the possibility that this turns into an Upset Weekend. If that happens, Alabama and Clemson will benefit as each sits idly by with a week off to prepare for the November stretch run.

Who Is On Upset Alert

The Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com favor all three of the higher-ranked school to come out ahead in this week's matchups of AP-ranked Top 25. Oklahoma State, however, opened as a 1.5-point underdog at the sportsbooks for its visit to Kansas State so that obviously puts the Cowboys on Upset Alert.

Tennessee is next in-line as you just don't know what you're going to get from Kentucky each week. It feels like a lot of people are overlooking this game, but the Wildcats certainly aren't one that the Vols can sleepwalk through. So far, Tennessee has been performing as if it is on a mission. Keeping up that intensity every week can be difficult and draining.

The probability of Ohio State losing at Penn State seems minuscule as both the oddsmakers and computer have the Buckeyes as hefty favorites.

More About Those Games

The biggest game of the week, and the one with the strongest implications on the College Football Playoff, is between No. 2 Ohio State (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) and No. 13 Penn State (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten). If the Nittany Lions have any shot at making the Big Ten Championship Game and being in the playoff, then they have to win this one. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on FOX.

A game that is flying a bit under the radar this weekend is No. 9 Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) at No. 22 Kansas State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12). The late-afternoon meeting (3:30 PM ET, FOX) sees the Cowboys flying in with momentum after last week’s home win over Texas. While Oklahoma State has a prolific offense, it faces a stout Kansas State defense that is allowing just 19.7 points per game. The Wildcats allowed nearly double that season average in last week’s 38-28 loss at TCU.

No. 19 Kentucky (5-2, 2-2 SEC) and No. 3 Tennessee (7-0, 3-0 SEC) is an intriguing nightcap (7:00 PM ET, ESPN). The Volunteers, two weeks removed from a home win over Alabama, are looking to solidify their playoff resume and another top 25 win would certainly do that. A Tennessee win would be the fourth over a currently-ranked team this season, and fifth over a team that was ranked when the game took place. Kentucky looked much improved last week in beating a ranked Mississippi State, snapping a two-game losing streak.
