The Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com had projected 11 outright upsets this week, but now we're down to 8 after the Cal-Arizona State, Rice-Louisiana Tech and Texas A&M-Tennessee games have been canceled or postponed. No new date was announced for the Owls and Bulldogs contest, but the Aggies and Vols game was tentatively moved to December 12 while the Bears-Sun Devils matchup will not be rescheduled.
Among the opposite plays were Wednesday night's Toledo-Western Michigan game which the Broncos won 41-38 in dramatic fashion to keep the computer undefeated (12-0) in picking MAC winners. Toledo opened as a 1-point favorite, but by Monday night Western Michigan was favored by 2-1/2 at nearly all of the major sportsbooks. With the computer liking the Broncos by 4.55, we suggested this would still be a good favorite play.
The Friday contests of FAU-FIU and Iowa-Minnesota present two more computer upset picks.
Cal at Arizona State was among the computer's other upset picks this week. Still in play are the SMU-Tulsa game as well as Baylor-Texas Tech, Illinois-Rutgers and more.
Last week, the computer was 3-2 ATS on its upset picks. It's 9-6 ATS over the last two weeks.
Our "Easy Pickins" selections last week didn't prove to be so easy. Though we went a solid 4-1 straight up, we fell under the spread at 2-3. "Easy Pickins" choices are games in which the computer is calling for the Vegas favorite to exceed the spread and our humans agree. The four contests we chose in that category this week are Arkansas-Florida, Army-Tulane, Indiana-Michigan State, and Wisconsin-Michigan.
"Hold Your Horses" picks take the underdog to beat the spread. We had chosen 3 games in that category - Temple at UCF, Oregon State at Washington, and Memphis at Navy. However the Tigers-Midshipmen game has since been canceled.
