Week Two of The United Football League saw over-all attendance improvement, mostly due the St. Louis home opener where 32,115 showed up to passionately cheer on their Battlehawks to a 26-9 victory over San Antonio. St. Louis led the league last year with an average of 34,365.
Total attendance across four games in week 1 was 33,868, compared to this week's total of 64,888.
The Battlehawks (2-0) have allowed a league-leading total of just 15 points in their two games while scoring a total of 57, which also leads the UFL.
A 45-yard field goal from Rodrigo Blankenship opened the scoring with 1:35 to go in the first period for a 3-0 St. Louis lead. No touchdowns were scored until running back Jacob Saylors darted 20 yards with 11:04 to go in the second and he added the 5-yard two-point conversion run for an 11-0 advantage. He would wind up scoring all 3 St. Louis touchdowns, though he only carried the ball 11 times for 46 yards. Blankenship added a second field goal from 22 yards in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
Saylors had a 1-yard TD run in the second, set up by 58-yard pass from Manny Wilkins to Gary Jennings, Jr. on his only target of the day. His final TD came on a 5-yard run in the third quarter with 7:41 to play
St. Louis has now won 7 straight home games.
After knocking off San Antonio 33-9 a year ago, the Renegades escaped in week two with an 11-9 victory over Houston in an early Sunday game. The Roughnecks came up empty on a two-point conversion try with just 1:18 remaining. There are no onside kicks, but a team can elect to try to convert a 4th-and-12 from their own 28-yard line. The Roughnecks tried and failed, and the same was over. Houston never led in the game as the Renegades had advantages of 3-0, and 11-3.
On Saturday at Audi Field in D.C., the Defenders rallied past Memphis at the home of the Beer Cup Snake. A 43-yard Memphis field goal attempt with 1:52 to play was blocked to protect the DC lead. Jonathan Adams tallied 9 catches for 128 yards for Memphis as the Showboats outgained DC by a 308-257 margin. The Defenders had taken the lead with 8:25 to go in the game on Jordan Ta'amu connected with Ben Bresnahan for a 3-yard touchdown hookup.
On Friday night in Detroit, Birmingham got back on the winning track with a 21-12 win at Ford Field to even both teams at 1-1 atop the USFL conference. Alex McGough was injured on the first play so Matt Corral took over at quarterback and completed 18-of-29 for 198 yards with a TD and 2 INT's. Despite the quick loss of the 2023 league MVP, the Stallions were up 18-0 after Corral's 52-yard TD pass to Deon Cain to begin the fourth quarter. However, Birmingham was just 1-of-4 in the red zone.
