Tracking FBS Conference Championship Games

November 24, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Heading into the final week of the regular season, the American Athletic Conference is the only title game matchup to be set with Army due to battle Tulane. Bit even that game doesn't have the final piece of the puzzle solved, which is where they will meet. Both are 7-0 in conference play with Army hosting UTSA this week, and Tulane hosting Memphis.

In the ACC, we know one thing for sure - everybody's preseason prediction of which teams would meet for the conference championship was at least half wrong because no one we know of had SMU favored to win the ACC title.  But here we are - the Mustangs have secured one spot, and the other will be Miami or Clemson.

In the Big Ten, Oregon awaits a possible rematch with Ohio State. If the Buckeyes fall to Michigan, the Ducks could face Indiana or Penn State.

The Big 12 says there are as many as 256 scenarios that could play out, depending on the outcome of 7 games

In CUSA, Jax State awaits either Liberty, Sam Houston or WKU.  Ironically, those four teams all square-off this weekend.

The MAC has both spots up for grabs, while the Mountain West knows Boise State will host either UNLV or Colorado State.

Georgia will face the winner of Texas at Texas A&M for the SEC Championship.

The Sun Belt has five teams in the mix.

This is where all of the Conference Championship Games stand.

ACC

Where: Charlotte
When: Saturday, 12/7 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC
Clinched: SMU (10-1, 7-0)
Contenders: Miami (10-1, 6-1), Clemson (9-2, 7-1)

Clemson's ACC slate is done and the Tigers will host South Carolina on Saturday at Noon and then go to the locker room to watch Miami at Syracuse at 3:30 for its final conference game.

American

Where: at Army or at Tulane
When: Friday, 12/6 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC
Clinched: Army (9-1, 7-0), Tulane (9-2, 7-0)

Army hosts UTSA on Saturday at Noon. By then, Tulane will have already hosted Memphis as those two meet on Thanksgiving night at 7:30.

B1G

Where: Indianapolis
When: Saturday, 12/7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
Clinched: Oregon (11-0, 8-0)
Contenders: Ohio State (10-1, 7-1), Indiana (10-1, 7-1), Penn State (10-1, 7-1)

The three teams have games in succession on Saturday.
Ohio State hosts Michigan at the obligatory Noon start time.
Penn State hosts Maryland at 3:30.
Indiana hosts rival Purdue at 7:30.

Big 12

Where: Arlington
When: Saturday, 12/7 at 12 p.m. ET on ABC.
Clinched: None
Contenders: Top four are Arizona State (9-2, 6-2), Iowa State (9-2, 6-2), BYU (9-2, 6-2), Colorado (8-3, 6-2).

According to the conference, there are 256 combinations that can play out, and 8 teams are mathematically alive. The only reason there aren't nine teams available is that Texas Tech and West Virginia will meet with the loser completely out of the picture.

Colorado hosts Oklahoma State on Friday at Noon.

These games are all on Saturday:
Arizona State plays at Arizona at 3:30.
Iowa State hosts Kansas State (8-3, 5-3)  at 7:30.
BYU hosts Houston at 10:15.

Just in case, here are the games involving the less likely candidates, all of which are also on Saturday:
Baylor (7-4, 5-3) hosts Kansas at Noon.
TCU (7-4, 5-3) visits Cincinnati at 6.
Texas Tech (7-4, 5-3) hosts West Virginia (6-5, 5-3)

CUSA

Where: Jacksonville, AL
When: Friday, 12/6 at 7 p.m. ET on CBSSN.
Clinched: Jax State (8-3, 7-0)
Contenders: Liberty (8-2, 5--2), WKU (7-4, 5-2), Sam Houston (8-3, 5-2)

Liberty is in with a win at Sam Houston on Friday at 3:30.
WKU is in with a win at home over Jax State on Saturday at 4, if Liberty has lost on Friday.
Sam Houston is in with a win over Liberty and a Jax State win.

MAC

Where: Detroit
When: Saturday, 12/7 at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN
Clinched: None
Contenders: Ohio (8-3, 6-1) BGSU (7-4, 6-1), Miami (7-4, 6-1), Buffalo (7-4, 5-2)

Winner of Bowling Green hosting Miami on Friday at Noon should be in, and would play Ohio if Bobcats win at home over Ball State on Friday at Noon.

MWC

Where: at Boise, Idaho
When: Friday, 12/6 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX
Clinched: Boise State (10-1, 7-0)
Contenders: UNLV (9-2, 5-1), Colorado State (7-4, 5-1)

Colorado State hosts Utah State on Friday at 3:30
UNLV hosts Nevada on Saturday at 8.

Colorado State and UNLV did not meet in the regular season so if both teams both win (or lose), the tie will be broken by CFP rankings (if applicable), or results-based computer metrics.

SEC

Where: Atlanta
When: Saturday, 12/7, at 4 p.m. ET on ABC
Clinched: Georgia (9-2, 6-2)
Contenders: Texas (10-1, 6-1), Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2).

The two teams meet at Texas A&M on Saturday at 7:30. Who would have thought the reincarnation of this rivalry game would lead to this? They haven't met since 2011.

Sun Belt

Where: TBD
When: Saturday, 12/7, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN
Clinched: None
West Contenders: Louisiana (9-2, 6-1 SBC), Arkansas State (7-4, 5-2 SBC), South Alabama (6-5, 5-2 SBC)
East Contenders: Marshall (8-3, 6-1 SBC), Georgia Southern (7-4, 5-2 SBC)

Louisiana visits UL-Monroe Saturday at Noon.
Arkansas State hosts ODU Saturday at 3:30.
South Alabama hosts Texas State Friday at 3:30.

Marshall visits JMU Saturday at 7:30.
Georgia Southern hosts App State Saturday at 6.

FBS vs. FCS

The final three games between FCS and FBS schools took place this past weekend with Charleston Southern, The Citadel and Wofford all losing convincingly to Florida State, Clemson and South Carolina, respectively.

FBS schools were 115-6 in FBS-FCS games this season, and are a cumulative 1,915-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there were 121 matchups scheduled between FBS and FCS schools with 119 playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

15 schools were not scheduled to play a FCS opponent. Of those fifteen schools, 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, were repeats from the list of schools in 2023 that played all FBS programs.

2024 FCS wins vs. FBS:
August 24: Montana State 35, New Mexico 31
September 7: St. Francis (PA) 23, Kent State 17
September 7: Idaho 17, Wyoming 13
September 7: Southern Utah 27, UTEP 24 (OT)
September 21: Monmouth 45, FIU 42
September 28: UT-Martin 24, Kennesaw 13

In 2023, FBS schools were 114-4. These were the FCS wins last year:
September 9: Idaho 33, Nevada 6
September 9: Southern Illinois 14, Northern Illinois 12
September 9: Fordham 40, Buffalo 37
September 16: Sacramento State 30, Stanford 23
