Matt Wells was fired on Monday from Texas Tech after a 5-3 start at program that was expected to finish 4-8. Wells came to the Red Raiders after a six-year stint at Utah State where was twice named conference coach of the year. At Lubbock, his first two teams each won 4 games, but Texas Tech jumped out to a 4-1 start this season. Sonny Cumbie, a former TT quarterback and first-year offensive coordinator will handle interim duties until a new full-time head coach is hired. Cumbie led the nation in total offense and passing in 2004.

Wells becomes the sixth head coach to lose his job midseason in 2021.

Nick Rolovich was fired on Monday, October 18 by Washington State for failing to get vaccinated by the state-imposed deadline in online casino. Rolovich was 4-3 this season after a 1-3 inaugural campaign during the shortened 2020 Covid season.

It was announced on Sunday, October 17 that Ed Orgeron (4-3) will stay as head coach at LSU through the end of the 2021 season, but a nationwide search for his replacement is already underway.  Orgeron's team won the national championship in 2019, but has gone just 9-8 since then.

Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Jared Benko on Sunday (September 26) announced that they are parting ways with head coach Chad Lunsford. The move ends Lunsford's tenure as Georgia Southern's head football coach, where he led the Eagles to a 28-21 overall record in four-plus seasons.

"After a thorough review and evaluation of our football program, I have made a decision that a change in leadership is in the best interest of our team and University," Benko said. Cornerbacks coach Kevin Whitley will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The school will undergo a national search for its next head football coach.

USC announced late Monday that Clay Helton had been fired as head coach of the Trojans. The move came two days after USC lost 42-28 at home to Stanford as a 17.5-point favorite. The Trojans has been preseason-tabbed as national champion material by the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com.

The team had plenty of talent and experience back in the fold and, though the loss was unexpected, Helton's dismissal risks tearing the team down even further. After the game on Saturday, an 11-1 season was not unrealistic. By Monday evening, a 6-6 season was not unrealistic.

Helton was named interim head coach in 2015 after Steve Sarkisian was let go five games in to the season. He was later elevated to head coach. Helton's teams won 3 PAC-12 South titles and the 2017 conference championship. Helton was 46-24 overall and 36-13 in conference play. Associate head coach Donte WIlliams was elevated to interim head coach.

After just two games of the 2021 season, Randy Edsall is out as the head coach of UConn and his DC, Lou Spanos, will finish out the year as interim head coach of the Huskies. Edsall was hired for a second stint as head coach in December of 2016, but failed to recapture the magic of his 1999-2010 tenure when he oversaw the transition from the FCS to the FBS (classified as 1-AA and 1-A at the time).

Edsall was 74-70 in hist first stint, but just 6-32 since being rehired. He was lured away by Maryland after leading UConn to the Fiesta Bowl in 2010, but couldn't duplicate the success he had with the Huskies. He was fired by Maryland halfway through the 2015 season. Overall, Edsall is 96-104 as a head coach.
