Each week during the 2022 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will be honored for outstanding defensive player. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch list.
Additionally, the Augusta Sports Council announces the Ray Guy Award top punter each week, the FWAA announces the weekly Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes top-placer kickers each week in contention for the Lou Groza Award.
Hyatt helped propel then-No.6 Volunteers past then-No. 3 Alabama, 52-49 as the 6-0, 180-pound junior from Irmo, South Carolina had 6 receptions for 207 yards and 5 TDs on Saturday in Knoxville. The performance by Hyatt and the Volunteers boosted their ranking in the AP Top 25 poll to #3 for Week 8. The Volunteers head into the new week looking forward to hosting UT-Martin on Saturday in Neyland Stadium.
The 6-5, 275-pound junior from Marietta, Georgia showed commendable efforts in Saturday's 34-28 win over Florida State. Murphy compiled 6 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble. Murphy and the fifth-ranked Tigers will host the fourteenth-ranked Syracuse Orange in Death Valley this Saturday.
Jacoby Windmon turned last Saturday’s game in Michigan State’s favor twice last Saturday, the second time in overtime in forcing a Wisconsin fumble that the Spartans recovered and later scored to take an important 34-28 Big Ten win in East Lansing. Windmon forced both Badgers turnovers with an earlier interception to go with his season-best 11 tackles to earn the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honor for games during the weekend of Oct. 15, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.
In his first start at linebacker – the previous six came at defensive end – the 6-2, 250-pound senior from New Orleans, La., also posted two tackles for loss. The first-quarter interception was the first of his career and led to Michigan State’s first touchdown. He is the first MSU player to record double-digit tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in the same game since Joe Bachie in 2017 at Michigan.
Ulbrich punted 9 times during the game against Western Kentucky for a total of 447 yards. His gross average was 49.67 and his net average was 44.33 yards due to him having only 3 punts returned for 28 yards. Four of his punts ended up inside Western Kentucky's 20-yard line and he had a long punt of 72 yards.
Griffin Kell’s three field goals were crucial in TCU’s come-from-behind 43-40 double overtime defeat of Oklahoma State in Big 12 action in Ft. Worth, Texas on Saturday. The Horned Frogs are 6-0 for the first time since 2017. Kell, a senior from nearby Arlington, Texas, connected from 47, 35 and 34 yards out. His two second quarter field goals kept the game in reach after the Horned Frogs trailed 24-7. He was 4-for-4 on extra point tries for a 13-point game. Kell has only had five field goal attempts this season, but he has made them all while also going 27-for-28 on extra points.
2021 Lou Groza Award winner Jake Moody kicked four field goals in Michigan’s 41-17 Big Ten defeat of Penn State in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday afternoon. The graduate kicker from Northville, Mich. was perfect on the day with makes of 37, 29, 24 and 23 yards out, with three of those coming in the first half to give the Wolverines a 16-14 lead at intermission. His 13 field goals this season tie him for 5th in FBS. Moody converted his three extra point attempts for a 15-point game which ties him for the second-most by a kicker this week. He has made all 33 PATs for a 72-point season that ranks second among FBS kickers.
Freshman Nathanial Vakos made four field goals including a career-long 55-yard bomb in Ohio’s 33-14 defeat of Western Michigan in MAC action in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Saturday, the Bobcats first road win of the season. The Avon, Ohio native also scored from 35, 33 and 26 yards out. He was 4-for-5 on the day with the miss being the first of a career that now stands at 10-for-11 on field goals. He made his three extra point attempts for a 15-point game, tied for second among FBS kickers this week. His 56 points for the season lead the team in scoring.
The Maxwell, Bednarik, Ray Guy, Lou Groza and Bronko Nagurski Awards are members of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
