Super Bowl defending champ Eagles make Barkley highest paid running back

March 5, 2025 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Running back Saquon Barkley helped lift Philadelphia to the Super Bowl championship and the Eagles' front office has responded with over $40 million of appreciation in a two-year extension, making him the first $20 million+ running back in history.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, and other sources, $15 is guaranteed and bonus incentives could make the deal worth an extra $15 million.

Barkley only rushed for 57 yards in the Super Bowl, but that was enough to set a new single season NFL rushing record (regular season + playoffs) with 2,504 yards to top the previous mark of 2,476 that belonged to Terrell Davis of Denver in the 1987 season. Barkley was 100 yards short of Eric Dickerson's record (regular season only) of 2,105 after sitting out the final game in advance of the playoffs. But Barkley also set a new NFL mark with 2,857 total yards from scrimmage.

The Super Bowl MVP went to Jalen Hurts who had 293 total yards with 221 passing and 2 touchdowns to go along with 72 rushing yards and another TD.

Over-all, the Philadelphia Eagles finished the season at 18-3 after a 14-3 regular season while capturing the NFC East with a 5-1 record. They were 5-0 vs. AFC teams in the regular season. (See NFL Rankings).

The 18 over-all wins tied the 2007 Patriots, the 1985 Bears and the 1984 Forty-niners for the most in NFL history.

With the NFL Combine in the rearview, here is a look at the Eagles as they plan for the NFL Draft in late April they strive to hoist another Vince Lombardi trophy in 2025.

Philadelphia Eagles

2024 Record: 14-3 regular season, 18-3 over-all (5-1 NFC East, 1st place) Super Bowl Champs
Odds to win 2025 Super Bowl: +600, No. 1 of all 32 teams
General Manager: Howie Roseman (2010-14, 2019-present)
Head Coach: Nick Sirianni (2021)
Offensive Coordinator: Kevin Patullo (2025)
Defensive Coordinator: Vic Fangio (2024)

General manager Howie Roseman is a career Philadelphia Eagles since 2000 when he was first hired as an intern. He was elevated to GM in 2010, but that title was briefly interrupted when Chip Kelly was hired in 2015. Kelly was give both the Head Coach and GM titles, though Roseman's responsibilities didn't severely change as he took on the title of Executive VP of Operations. His GM tag was restored in 2019. The Eagles have 252 wins since 2000 for an average of just over 10 per year.

Head coach Sirianni actually worked for the Kansas City Chiefs for his first several NFL seasons after beginning as an assistant coach in the small college ranks with proverbial D3 powerhouse Mount Union and Indiana University-Pennsylvania. But it would be his work with the Chargers from 2013-2017 and, more so, the Colts from 2018-2020 (OC) that put Sirianni on the radar as potential head coach hire. After going 9-8 in his first season, the Eagles have won no fewer than 11 games each year, He sports a .701 winning percentage with a record of 54-23 that incudes a 6-3 playoff mark.

Kevin Patullo was named the offensive coordinator on February 19 after Kellen Moore left to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Moore spent just one season as OC in Philadelphia after one season with the Chargers in 2023. Before that, he was the OC in Dallas for 4 seasons. Patullo has been with the Eagles since 2021 when he was hired to serve as the passing game coordinator. He was promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2022. Upon Patullo's naming as AHC, Jemal Singleton (running backs coach) was named AHC after he had flirted with moving to New Orleans as a part of Moore's staff.

Vic Fangio continues in his role as DC in 2025. After serving as the head coach of the Broncos from 2019-2021 and never producing a winning season, Fangio was fired with a 19-30 record. He took a consulting position with the Eagles in 2022, but left to become the DC at Miami for the 2023 campaign. He returned to Philadelphia last season and the Eagles easily led the league in yards allowed per game at 278.4 which was 32.8 yards fewer than the 2nd-ranked defense of the Titans. Philadelphia was also No.1 in passing yards allowed per game at just 174.2 (also leading the Titans), and 10th in run defense.
