Super 16 Poll: Top 3 Is a Reshuffling of Same Three Teams

October 13, 2024 by FWAA, NFF, CollegeFootballPoll.com

Texas upheld its No. 1 ranking with a convincing 34-3 victory over Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday and easily remains No. 1. But then-No. 2 Ohio State literally ran out of time in a 32-31 loss at then-No. 3 Oregon in the marquee matchup of poll teams on Saturday night in Eugene. By virtue of that result, the Ducks and Buckeyes switch places and Oregon now has tied its highest rating in the history of the poll which as previously achieved in December of 2014.

The Longhorns will face No. 5 Georgia in a much-anticipated showdown of SEC powers in Austin on Saturday. The Bulldogs were jumped by Penn State for the No. 4 slot this week after the Nittany Lions won 33-30 at USC in OT, and Georgia was a 41-31 winner at home over a Mississippi State.team that is at the bottom of the SEC.

In a Saturday packed full of close finishes and overtime thrillers, Ohio State let the game slip away without getting off a possible field goal attempt that could have won the game. Will Howard tried to extend a running play to set up the field goal opportunity but, in doing so, the clock ran out.

Tennessee slipped from 8th to 9th after also needing overtime to secure a 23-17 win at home over Florida.

LSU moved up from 13th to 10th after a magical comeback in regulation which the Bayou Bengals then converted into a 29-26 OT win. LSU held Ole Miss to a field goal on their OT possession, and needed just one play to get the walk-off win with Garret Nussmeier's 25-yard TD pass to Kyren Lacy.

Alabama stays at No. 7 after holding on to beat South Carolina in Tuscaloosa, avoiding a second consecutive loss to an unranked opponent.

That sets up Alabama's visit to Tennessee as another Top Ten battle this Saturday.

The rest of the Super 16 teams either won (Clemson, Notre Dame, Iowa State and BYU) or were idle (Miami-FL, Texas A&M and Indiana).

The SEC leads with seven teams in the poll, followed by the Big Ten with four, the ACC and Big 12 with two each and the Independents with one.

Congrove Ballot

Voters in the Super 16 Poll consist of FWAA writers and members of the College Football Hall of Fame who were selected to create a geographically balanced perspective.

CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove has been on the voting panel since the September 24, 2017 poll. He is one of the 47 voters who put Texas at No. 1. But Congrove has had the Longhorns there since week 3. The other 7 first-place votes all switched from Ohio State to Oregon.

Here is Congrove's entire Top 16 ballot:

(1) Texas, (2) Oregon, (3) Ohio State), (4) Penn State, (5) Miami, FL, (6) Alabama, (7) Georgia, (8) Tennessee, (9) Iowa State, (10) Clemson, (11) Notre Dame, (12) LSU, (13) Ole Miss, (14) BYU, (15) Texas A&M, (16) Pitt.
