Super 16 Poll voters coronate a new King as Texas ascends to the throne following a weekend that saw former leader Georgia escape with a 13-12 win at Kentucky. None of the Top 16 teams lost and three were idle -- Ohio State, Penn State and USC,
It's likely not so much that Texas crushed UTSA 56-7, but more of a universal revelation that even without Quinn Ewers at QB -- he left the game in the second quarter due to an abdominal strain -- the Longhorns don't skip beat with Arch Manning at quarterback.
Georgia still received 24 first-place votes, but that's 20 fewer than a week ago. Texas gained 18 of those votes lost by the 'Dawgs and Ohio State picked up two for a total of 4 this week, even though the Buckeyes were idle.
The 54 voters are members of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) or college football hall-of-famers, and include CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove.
Georgia is now 2nd in the rankings.
Ohio State, Alabama and Ole Miss keep the 3, 4 and 5 spots, but Tennessee and Miami flipped their places at 6 and 7 with the Vols up and the 'Canes down.
Oregon's convincing Civil War win helped the Ducks get a 2-spot bump to No. 8, forcing Penn State down a spot to 9, and USC also down a spot to No. 10.
Michigan was expelled from the Top 16 after a 28-18 win at home over Arkansas State, and LSU took the Big Blue's place by virtue of a last-minute 36-33 win at South Carolina.
Georgia had topped all three previous polls this season, and an SEC team had been ranked No. 1 in 58 of the previous 59 weeks dating back to September 29, 2019. Now, it's 58 of the last 60.
In all, the SEC had seven teams in the poll this week, including Missouri (No. 11) and LSU (No. 16). The Big Ten and Big 12 had four teams each and the ACC one.
His ballot this week remains exactly the same as last week, as no one on his ballot lost. In fact, 5 of the 16 teams didn't even take a snap as they enjoyed a bye week. The idle programs on his ballot were Ohio State, USC, Penn State, Louisville and Iowa State.
