LSU takes the top spot for a second straight week after defeating previously unbeaten No. 2 Alabama on the Crimson Tide's home field. The Tigers picked up 25 first-place votes and were voted No. 1 by 42 of the 46 participants. The remaining 1st-place votes went to Ohio State (3) and Clemson (1).
The 46-41 loss only dropped Alabama from 2nd to 4th. Ohio State and Clemson both moved up to the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
The other major development affecting the poll was Minnesota's upset of Penn State. With the victory, the Golden Gophers jumped from No. 13 to No.7. Previously unbeaten Penn State fell from 5th to 10th. Otherwise, the same 16 teams remained in the poll from last week with minor movements.
The SEC and Big Ten each had five teams in the poll. The Big 12 and Pac-12 had two teams each. The ACC and Independents had one each.

The poll was established at the conclusion of the 2013 season by long-time partners, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the National Football Foundation (NFF). Voters rank the top 16 teams in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and the results will be released every Sunday of the 2019 season; the individual votes of all members will also be made public. The pollsters consist of FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers who were selected to create a balanced-geographical perspective.
