Super 16 Poll - Top 7 Unchanged After Week 5 Results

October 1, 2023 by FWAA, NFF, CollegeFootballPoll.com

The top seven are unchanged in this week's Super 16 College Football Poll. The 56 members who voted this week comprise a mixture of FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers who bring a geographically balanced perspective.

Top-ranked Georgia survived Auburn's upset bid on the road. Texas roared past Kansas in the second half in Austin. Michigan had no trouble at Nebraska. With Ohio State and Florida State both idle Saturday, the only Top 10 team to lose was then No. 10 Utah at Oregon State.

In fact, only two other poll teams from a week ago lost Saturday. Then-No. 13 LSU lost 55-49 at Ole Miss, and then-No.16 Duke fell 21-14 atb home to then-No. 11 Notre Dame in the final minute.

Five teams garnered first-place votes. Georgia saw a reduction from 46 to 28, while Michigan gains 10 for a total of 14. Texas is now at the top of 8 ballots - up from 1 just a week ago, while Florida State (4) and Washington (2) held steady with their No. 1 votes.

Losses dropped Utah (4-1), LSU (3-2) and Duke (4-1) out of this week's poll. The trio was replaced by Washington State (4-0), Ole Miss (4-1) and Oregon State (4-1).

The Pac-12 leads all leagues with five teams in the poll, followed by the Big Ten and the SEC with three each. The Big 12 and ACC have two apiece and the Independents one.

The voting members include CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove who is one of the four that has the Seminoles in the top spot on his ballot, and has put them there since their win over LSU on Labor Day weekend. His top 7 is unchanged this week with Georgia in 2nd, followed by USC, Texas, Michigan, Washington and Ohio State. He dropped Utah from 8th, but kept the Utes in the poll at No. 13 after their loss at Oregon State which he did not place among his Top 16. The Beavers lost 38-35 at Washington State two weeks ago. Congrove moved Penn State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Oregon up one spot each to fill the 8 through 12 holes. He had Duke ranked 14th, but inserts North Carolina in the Blue Devils' place this week. Tennessee remains 15 while Oklahoma takes LSU's spot at No. 16 after the Bayou Bengals fell at Ole Miss.
