Sun Belt Announces Football Preseason Awards & Poll

NEW ORLEANS — The Sun Belt Conference announced its 2022 Preseason All-Sun Belt Teams, individual awards and Preseason Poll on Monday.

Coastal Carolina redshirt junior quarterback Grayson McCall was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while his teammate sophomore defensive lineman Josaiah Stewart was dubbed the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. 

McCall—a two-time All-Sun Belt First Team honoree—was the Sun Belt Player of the Year in 2020 and 2021, the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2020 and repeats as the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year after earning the nod ahead of the 2021 season as well. Stewart was an All-Sun Belt First Team pick as a true freshman in 2021.

App State and Georgia State paced all conference programs with eight Preseason All-Sun Belt selections. The Mountaineers and Panthers were followed closely by Troy (7), Coastal Carolina (5) and Louisiana (5). All 14 Sun Belt programs were represented by at least one student-athlete across the two Preseason All-Sun Belt teams.

Troy led all teams with five First Team picks, while Coastal Carolina and Louisiana each produced four First Team honorees. App State produced a conference-high six Second Team selections, followed by five from Georgia State and four from Georgia Southern.

App State was picked to win the Sun Belt East Division and advance to its fourth Sun Belt Football Championship Game in the event’s five-year existence. The Mountaineers claimed 10-of-14 first-place votes, with Coastal Carolina (2), Georgia State (1) and Georgia Southern (1) also receiving nods.

Louisiana, which has advanced to all four Sun Belt Football Championship Games, was picked to win its fifth-straight Sun Belt West Division title. The Ragin’ Cajuns earned 12-of-14 first-place votes, with South Alabama (2) receiving the other two.

Louisiana is the reigning Sun Belt football champion, having defeated App State, 24-16, in the 2021 Sun Belt Football Championship Game.

The 2022 season will be the Sun Belt’s first as a 14-team football conference and will kick off with Sun Belt Football Media Days on Tuesday, July 25, and Wednesday, July 26. The East Division head coaches and student-athletes will appear on Tuesday, with the West Division to follow on Wednesday.

The entire event will be broadcast on ESPN+, with a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon CT and an afternoon session from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. CT each day.
