The Pittsburgh Steelers were 31-25 losers to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV (45) in Arlington, Texas. That was the franchise's third Super Bowl appearance in six seasons and the previous two gave Pittsburgh its 5th and 6th world championships.
Since then, neither the Steelers or the Packers have returned to the big game.
This past season, Pittsburgh took 2nd-place in the AFC North, but ended the season on a 5-game losing streak. The Steelers dropped both regular season games to the Ravens, and fell for a third time to Baltimore in the Wild Card round.
Here is a look at the Steelers as they prepare for the NFL Draft and try to regain their glory days in the 2025 NFL season.
2024 Record: 10-7 (3-3 AFC North, 2nd place)
Odds to reach 2025 Super Bowl: +8000, 23rd-best
General Manager: Omar Khan (2022)
Head Coach: Mike Tomlin (2007)
Offensive Coordinator: Arthur Smith (2024)
Defensive Coordinator: Teryl Austin (2022)
Omar Khan has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2001 after working with the New Orleans Saints the previous four seasons in football operations. Dividends paid off quickly in the Steel City as he and then-GM Kevin Colbert developed a roster that would win Super Bowls at the end of the 2005 (XL) and 2008 (XLIII) seasons, and fall short in Super Bowl XLV at the end of the 2010 campaign.
Each of those Super Bowl victories was led by Big Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. Khan and the Steelers made him their No. 1 pick (11th over-all) out of the Miami Redhawks in 2004. He retired at the end of the 2021 season.
Bruce Arians was the offensive coordinator for the last two Super Bowls before he left for the same job at Indianapolis in 2012, but wound up serving as interim head coach to great reviews. Arians become the head coach for Arizona the following year.
Khan succeeded Colbert when the latter stepped down after the 2022 draft in a move that had been announced four months earlier.
It has now been 14 seasons since the last Super Bowl appearance for the Steelers, who have been led from the sidelines by Mike Tomlin since 2007. The longest current tenured head coach in the NFL was at the helm for the second Super Bowl win under Khan while Bill Cowher was the head coach for the first one. Cowher had a 15-year tenure and Tomlin will be entering his 19th season.
Tomlin will begin the 2025 season needing just 7 win to enter the top ten all-time NFL head coaches for regular victories as he stands at 183-107-2 overall. His 8-11 playoff mark brings his career totals to 191-118-2. However, the Steelers are 0-for-5 in their playoff opportunities since their last Super Bowl appearance.
Both coordinators are relatively new under Tomlin, with Teryl Austin becoming the defensive coordinator in 2022 and Arthur Smith taking the offensive coordinator position this past season.
Austin has been with the club since 2019 when he was hired to coach the secondary and was given the title of senior defensive assistant. His defense in 2024 ranked a so-so 12th overall, a lowly 25th against the pass and a stingy 6th versus the run. The prior year rankings 21, 17 and 19.
Smith had served the 2021-2023 seasons as the head coach in Atlanta where his teams went 7-10 all three seasons. After replacing Matt Canada, his 2024 offense ranked 23rd overall, 27th throwing and 11th rushing. Those numbers were almost identical to the 2023 season under Canada when they ranked 25th over-all, 25th passing and 13th rushing.
One big question surround Pittsburgh this offseason is who will be the quarterback in 2025, though Justin Fields would appear to be the favorite.
