The Southeastern Conference on Wednesday revealed the opponents, plus home and away designations, for games on its 2024 football schedule, the first season in which the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas will participate in SEC competition.
Oddsmakers have Texas favored to win the Big 12 in its final season in that league.
Georgia is expected to repeat as SEC Champs, as well as National Champs, despite losing 10 players to the NFL Draft this year. That's in addition to the 15 Bulldog players that were drafted a year ago.
The Philadelphia Eagles used their first round picks to take DT Jalen Carter with the 9th over-all selection and OLB Nolan Smith with the 30th pick in the first round.
Among the features of the matchups announced Wednesday is that each of the 14 existing Conference members will play either Oklahoma or Texas - home or away - during the 2024 season.
As previously announced, SEC teams in 2024 will play eight conference games plus one required opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or major independent during the 2024 season when the SEC becomes a 16-team conference.
The slate of home and away designations in 2024 was built with the provision that no school will travel to the same location to which it traveled in 2023.
The 2024 SEC opponents were determined based on two primary factors: traditional opponents and balance of schedule strength.
Balance of schedule strength was based on each school's conference winning percentage since the last expansion of the SEC in 2012. The winning percentages for the performance of Oklahoma and Texas in the Big 12 since 2012 were included in determining 16 positions ranked by winning percentage.
Each school's schedule in 2024 will include four opponents - two home and two away -- whose winning percentage ranked among the top eight conference winning percentages since 2012. Also, each school's 2024 schedule will include four opponents - two home and two away -- whose winning percentages ranked among the second eight conference winning percentages since 2012.
While no school will travel to the same location to which it traveled in 2023, it should be noted that when a long-term schedule format is determined, it may not be possible to structure a schedule that does not include some schools playing at the same location in back-to-back years in the first year of a new format.
A complete 2024 SEC football schedule that includes dates of games will be announced later this year.
It was also previously announced the SEC will eliminate divisional standings beginning in 2024. The SEC Championship Game will feature the two top teams in the Conference standings at the end of the regular season.
For their first season in the SEC, Oklahoma will host heritage SEC members Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee, and continue its rivalry with Texas.
The SEC press release put the Texas game under 'home' games, but the Red River Showdown is contractually obligated to remain at Cotton Bowl Stadium at the Texas State Fairgrounds through 2025, and talks are underway to extend the agreement. Texas leads the all-time series 63-50-5.
The Sooners' 2024 SEC road schedule contains trips to Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss and Missouri.
The Texas-Texas A&M rivalry will be renewed for the first time since 2011 as the Longhorns' 2024 away slate features a visit to College Station, as well as games at Arkansas and Vanderbilt.
At home, Texas will take on Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and Mississippi State.
Oklahoma and Alabama have met just six times in history with the Sooners holding a 3-2-1 advantage by average score of 26.7 to 26.2.
Four of those meetings have occurred in bowl games, including the two most-recent collisions which took place in the 2013 season Sugar Bowl which Oklahoma won 45-31, and the 2018 Orange Bowl which Alabama won by a score of 45-34.
The only home-and-home games came in 2002 and 2003. Oklahoma won in Norman in 2002 by a 37-27 count when Dennis Franchione was the Tide's head coach. The Sooners prevailed 20-13 in Tuscaloosa in 2003 in Mike Shula's first season as Alabama head coach. Bob Stoops led Oklahoma on both occasions.
Oklahoma holds a 3-1 edge over Tennessee with the only loss coming by a 17-0 score in the first meeting in the Orange Bowl at the end of the 1938 season. The Sooners avenged that defeat by returning to the Orange Bowl for a 26-24 win at the end of the 1967 season.
The Sooners and Vols played a home-and-home series in 2014 and 2015 with Oklahoma first prevailing 34-10 in Norman, and following that up with a 31-24 win in Knoxville.
Oklahoma and South Carolina have never met.
The Sooners are 2-0 vs. Auburn, 1-2 vs. LSU, and 0-1 vs. Ole Miss. All of those confrontations came in bowl games.
Oklahoma's games against Auburn came in Sugar Bowl contests at the end of the 1971 and 2016 seasons.
Oklahoma's meetings with LSU happened in Sugar Bowls at the end of the 1949 and 2003 seasons, and its only win over the Bayou Bengals happened in that first meeting. The most-recent clash took place at the 2019 Peach Bowl.
The Sooners closed out the 20th century by falling 27-25 on New Year's Eve in 1999 to Ole Miss in the Independence Bowl.
Oklahoma and Missouri will renew a rivalry that goes back to 1902 and was dominated by the Sooners, 67-24-5, including a 32-4 mark since 1970. The schools last met in 2010 and 2011 with the Tigers taking the first game in Columbia to end a 7-game losing skid to OU, while the Sooners rebounded for a 38-28 win in Norman.
Texas is shockingly 3-8-1 vs. Vanderbilt, but the schools have not met since 1928.
The Longhorns are 2-0-1 vs. Florida and rolled 26-0 in Gainesville in 1940 in their last meeting. All 3 contests came in regular season games with the first two in Austin.
Texas is 4-1 vs. Georgia, having last met in the 2018 season Sugar Bowl game that produced a 28-21 win for Texas. Georgia's only win in the series came in the 1983 season Cotton Bowl.
Texas is 1-0 vs. Kentucky with a 7-6 win at home in 1951.
The 'Horns are 2-2 vs. Mississippi State. They last met in the 1998 season Cotton Bowl which Texas won 38-11. MSU took back-to-back, home-and-away wins in 1991 and 1992.
Texas is 56-23 vs. Arkansas, but the Hogs have won the last two meetings. The former conference rivals met in Fayetteville in 2021 with the Razorbacks registering a 40-21 victory, and Arkansas romped to a 31-7 in the 2014 Texas Bowl.
The Longhorns are 76-37-5 vs. Texas A&M but, as mentioned earlier, the schools haven't met in 2011. The programs split their last 6 meetings with Texas winning the final showdown, 27-25, on Thanksgiving weekend at College Station.
