Saturday Recap: Georgia wins Dawg Fight over Notre Dame, Wisconsin Blasts Michigan

September 22, 2019 by Dave Congrove

Georgia remains undefeated in three tries against Notre Dame after picking up a 23-17 win in a "Dawg Fight" between the hedges in Athens on Saturday. A scoreless first quarter yielded to a 10-7 halftime lead for Notre Dame. Georgia established control in the 3rd, but still only managed a pair of field goals to take a 13-10 lead heading into the final stanza. A 15-yard TD pass from Jake Fromm to Lawrence Cager gave the Bulldogs a 20-10 advantage and Rodrigo Blankenship's 3rd field goal pushed it to 23-10. Notre Dame's ensuing 10-play 75-yard drive resulted in a 4-yard TD pass to provide the final score. The Irish then forced a poor Georgia punt, but solid defense ended the last-second threat at the 38.

The day began with Wisconsin decimating Michigan 35-14 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Jonathan Taylor had 143 yards and 2 TD's in the first quarter, and QB Jack Coan added a pair of touchdown runs in the second to make it 28-0 at halftime. Michigan's first half produced 3 punts, an interception and a fumble. The Wolverines wound up losing the turnover count 4-0. The Maize and Blue were a preseason favorite to win the national championship according to some online betting sites.

Next up was UCF's failed trip to Pittsburgh. Favored by double digits, the Golden Knights instead found themselves down 21-0 by the midway point of the second quarter. UCF's first half debacle included a blocked punt returned for a Pitt touchdown and 2 interceptions. The Knights were able to pull to within 21-10 at half, thanks in no small part to a Pitt fumble at its own 27 that led to UCF's first touchdown of the game. The 3rd quarter saw a 21-0 run by the visitors from Central Florida, including an 87-yard punt return by Otis Anderson for a 24-21 lead. After forcing a quick 3-and-out, UCF needed just 5 plays to go 68 yards and widen the gap to 31-21 on a 28-yard TD pass. But Pitt still had some fight left and answered with its own 5-play, 75-yard drive to pull back to within 3 with 4:11 to go in the 3rd quarter. The fourth quarter was a stalemate until UCF's 28-yard filed goal with only 4:36 left. Pitt was given new life by holding the Knights to just 3 on that drive and the result was a Panther march of 79 yards in 12 plays, ending in the 4th-down trick play that proved to be the game-winner. RB A.J. Davis took the snap and headed left, flipped the ball to Aaron Matthews running right, and Mathews threw to Kenny Pickett for 3-yard score.and a 35-34 upset victory.

The day ended with some PAC-12 After Dark insanity as UCLA rallied from 32 points down in the 3rd quarter to a 67-63 win over Washington State in Pullman. Cougar QB Anthony Gordon threw for 9 TD passes and 570 yards, but his 2 Interceptions and 1 fumbled also contributed to a 6-turnover night by the home team. The Bruins had just 2 giveaways. UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 507 yards and 5 touchdowns. including the 15-yard game winner to Demetric Felton with 1:07 to play in the game. The teams combined for 1,377 yards of total offense with Wazzu outgaining the visitors 720-657. https://www.bestussportsbetting.com/
