Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets will take on the Cleveland Browns in 2023 NFL Preseason Opener on Thursday, August 3 in Canton Ohio. Don't expect to see a lot of Rodgers on the field as he is likely to play the first two series and be done for the night, but it will be a moment that has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the J-E-T-S.
The Jets haven't posted a winning season since Rex Ryan was in the first two years of his tenure in 2009 and 2010. They finished second in the AFC East in each of those years, posing regular season marks of 9-7 in 2009, and 10-6 in 2010. Both campaigns came to a halt in the AFC Championship Game as New York fell 30-17 at Indianapolis in 2009, and 24-19 at Pittsburgh in 2010.
Current head coach Robert Saleh is in his third season and looks to Rodgers to help improve upon his 11-23 record. The oddsmakers seem to think there is a very good chance that the Jets will finish second in the division and possibly challenge Buffalo for the division crown. They list the Bills at +130 and the Jets at +250 with Miami a close third at +290, and the Patriots as an afterthought at +750.
New York only has the 11th-best odds of making the playoffs, but somehow has the 7th-best odds of reaching the Super Bowl.
Rodgers has a pair of familiar faces to throw to in Green Bay veterans Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb. Although Elijah Moore went to the Browns, the Jets return rookie standout Garrett Wilson who had 83 catches for 1,103 yards fresh out of Ohio State.
Following the HOF game against Cleveland, the Jets will have 9 days off before visiting Carolina. The home fans will have to wait until August 19 to see Rodgers at home against Tampa Bay, and the preseason ends with the Giants on August 26.
As for the regular season, the New York Jets' schedule is considered to be the league's 8th-toughest and features games against every team from the NFC East. A September trip to Dallas in week 2 is followed by home games against the Eagles on October 15, the Giants two weeks later, and the Commanders on December 24. They will also encounter Atlanta from the NFC South at MetLife on December 3.
Their AFC foes outside the division include every member of the west, including the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs at MetLife on October 1. The Jets visit Denver the following week, host the Chargers on November 6, and visit the Raiders on November 12.
New York will also take on AFC South member Houston at home on December 10, and will return to Ohio to see the Browns for a regular season game on December 28.
The Hall-of-Fame week of activities kick off the 104th NFL season and will feature the enshrinement of the newest members on August 5.
