The second weekly rankings by the College Football Playoff Committee have no real surprises or disappointments, for that matter, as Georgia takes the top spot following its 27-13 win over then-No. 1 Tennessee in Athens. Ohio State stays at No. 2, followed by Michigan which jumps up 2 spots from a week ago.
The committee's first rankings were criticized for what most believed was an indefensible under-ranking of TCU at No. 7. Everyone will likely nod their head in approval of this week's placement of the Horned Frogs as they land at No. 4. TCU visits a Texas squad that leapt from 24 to 18.
Tennessee falls down to 5th which was also on-par with expectations, and Oregon at No. 6 makes perfect sense, as well.
LSU bops up to 7th after the gutsy 2-point conversion win over Alabama. The Tide slip from 6th to 9th, behind USC.
Clemson takes a 6-spot decline after taking a 35-14 whipping at Notre Dame.
The highest-ranked Group of Five program is Tulane at No. 17. UCF surges from 25th to 22nd in advance of this week's matchup of those two schools in New Orleans in Saturday. They are the only Group of Five programs in the entire Top 25.
The committee's top 6 is not all that different from the Congrove Computer Rankings which has the same 6 schools, but ranks the top 3 as Ohio State, Michigan and Georgia. The committee's top 8 is a mirror image of the Super 16 Poll, of which Congrove is a voter.
Newcomers to the poll this week are Notre Dame at 20, Florida State at 23, Kentucky at 24 and Washington at 25. Those schools benefit from the disappearance of Oklahoma State (was 18), Syracuse (was 20), Wake Forest (was 21) and Oregon State (was 23).
The College Football Playoff matches the No. 1 ranked team vs. No. 4, and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in semifinal games that rotate annually among six bowl games – the Cotton, Fiesta, Peach, Orange Bowl, Sugar and Rose. This season's Playoff Semifinals will take place Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the Peach and Fiesta Bowls. The College Football Playoff National Championship will be Monday, January 9, 2023, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA.
