We called it. Almost to perfection.
Our prediction following Saturday's games was that the committee would rank Alabama first, followed by Notre Dame, Ohio State, Clemson, and just outside of that group would be Texas A&M and Florida. The committee flipped Ohio State and Clemson, but the rest of our choices fell right into place.
We also said, "It will be interesting to see what the committee does with and Cincinnati and BYU. While the AP has those teams ranked 7th and 8th, we think the committee will have a much wider separation with Cincinnati clearly in command as the top team outside the Power 5 conferences."
Indeed, the committee put Cincinnati at No. 7 and BYU a distant 14th.
Two other schools from outside the Power 5 conferences found a spot in the Top 25 with Coastal Carolina ranked 20th and Marshall 21st.
We are more than a bit surprised to find a 5-and-2 Georgia team at No. 9, just behind an undefeated Northwestern (5-0) team and ahead of a bunch of schools with records deserving of higher placement - specifically, Indiana (4-1), Oregon (3-0), USC (3-0), and Miami (7-1). Clearly the committee loves the SEC - always has - and is penalizing teams who started their season later (much later) than others.
