Old Ironsides pulled out a dramatic 20-17 win over NASA in double-overtime on Saturday in Philadelphia in the first overtime game in the 123-year history of the series.
After 60 minutes only produced a 10-10 tie and few exciting plays, Army opened overtime with a 25-yard run on its first play for its only offensive touchdown of the game. Then, lo and behold, Navy struck back just a quickly with a wide open wheel route pass on its first play to knot the game at 17.
Navy was driving in the second overtime when Army forced a fumble at the 1-yard line, putting the Black Knights in position to win on a field goal. After setting the ball up in the middle of the field on a 3rd-down run, Quinn Maretzki drilled the 39-yard boot for the win.
Maretzki also made a crucial 37-yard field goal with 1:53 left in regulation to create the 10-10 tie.
Army's only other touchdown in the game came on a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone.
The win narrowed Navy's advantage in the rivalry to 62-54-7 and Army has now won 5 of the last 7 meetings.
Army's uniforms paid homage to the 1st Armored Division nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' . The Tank Division was a major reason the Allies secured victory in Operation Torch 80 years ago in World War II, halting the momentum of the Nazis.
Navy's uniform was a salute to the 54 graduates of the USNA who have served as astronauts with NASA. Those include 1944 grad Alan Shepherd who was one of the original astronauts and America's first man in space.
