MLB Division Leaders and Team Stat-Toppers heading into weekend slate

April 4, 2025 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

After slightly more than a week of the 2025 Major League Baseball season, no team in the American League has more than five wins or fewer than two. Meanwhile, the National League has a lot more disparity. The LA Dodgers were the only team left without a blemish until they fell 3-2 at Philadelphia today. And, at the time of this article being published, Atlanta (0-7) had a 10-0 lead at home over the Marlins after 8 innings as the Braves look destined for their first win this weekend with a home series versus the Marlins.

Despite, the small sampling of games, the teams on top in each division are pretty much in-line with preseason expectations. Each of the current division leaders have the best odds to finish the job and win their respective division.

The New York Yankees (5-2) lead the AL East over the Tampa Bay Rays (4-2) while Boston Red Sox (4-4) and Baltimore Orioles (3-4) are off to slow starts. Toronto sits in the middle of the division at 5-3.

Every team in the AL Central is under water as the Detroit Tigers lead the division with a 3-4 mark, followed by the Cleveland Guardians and the Kansas City Royals who are each 2-4. And though the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins are tied for last at 2-5, they are just 1 full game out of first.

The Texas Rangers (5-2) top the AL West with the Los Angeles Angels just a half-game out at 4-2. The Houston Astros are two behind at 3-4, with the Athletics and the Seattle Mariners bring up the rear with identical 3-5 records.

In the senior circuit, the Philadelphia Phillies (5-1) lead the East by one-and-a-half games over the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets, each of whom are 4-3. The Washington Nationals are four games back at 1-5 while the, so-far, listless Braves have already dug a 5.5-game hole.

The Chicago Cubs are off to a 6-4 start to establish a half-game advantage on the St. Louis Cardinals (4-3), with the Milwaukee Brewers one-and-a-half games back at 3-4. The Cincinnati Reds (2-5) are 2.5 games out of first and a half-game clear of the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates (2-6).

As mentioned above, the Dodgers have yet to lose, but their 8-0 record only gives them a 1-game advantage on the San Diego Padres (7-1) and a one-and-a-half game lead on the San Francisco Giants (6-1). The Arizona Diamondback (4-3) are also sitting above .500 while the perennial division cellar dwellers, the Colorado Rockies, are in a familiar spot at 1-6.

The Yankees have outpaced their opponents by a cumulative 26 runs to all lead teams in positive run differential, but the Cubbies (63) top the Bronx Bombers by 1 for most runs scored. At the other end of that spectrum the Braves and Rockies have crossed home plate just 14 times over 7 games, while the Rays have allowed the fewest runs with 13 scored against them in 6 games.

As a team, the Yankees top the home run list as they have already blasted 23 dingers while the Dodgers follow with 19. The Rockies and Rays each have just three homers to their credit.

The Cardinals top all teams for batting average at .302, with the Phillies (.291) and Yankees (.288) taking second and third, respectively.

The Braves are hitting just .175 and 7 clubs are sitting at 1.98 or worse.

Thirteen shutouts have been pitched with three of those coming from the Dodgers. Not surprisingly them the Padres lead the Team ERA stat at 1.65 while the Brewers are at 6.21.
