The top two seeds in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers, both find themselves in jeopardy after three games of their respective series. The New York Mets, who were home for the first time in 16 days, delighted the home crowd by staking out a 2 games to 1 lead lead on the Phils with Tuesday's 7-2 victory, and the San Diego Padres did the same at home to the Dodgers with a 6-5 win.
A full slate of action today gets underway at 3:08 with the Detroit Tigers at the Cleveland Guardians, followed by start times of 5:08 in the Phillies-Mets best-of-five playoff, 7:08 for the Yankees-Royals, and 9:08 for the Dodgers-Padres. The Tigers, Mets, Royals and Padres are all home.
The Yanks and Royals, as well as the Guardians and Tigers, are tied at 1-apiece.
All of the away teams are favored today by 1.5 runs with the exception of San Diego at home which is also favored by 1.5 runs.
The scheduled starter for the Phillies is All-Star Ranger Suárez. Fellow southpaw Jose Quintana gets the start for the Mets in a effort to close out the series.
San Diego will try to eliminate the Dodgers with the Padres starting Dylan Cease while Dave Roberts had not yet decided who will take the mound for the Dodgers.
Could the Dodgers go out for the third straight season without advancing to the World Series?
Alex Cobb gets the nod for the Guardians while the Tigers had not yet named a Game 3 starter. Both games have been won by shutouts with Cleveland taking the opener, 7-0, on Saturday, and Detroit answering with a 3-0 win on Monday. There hasn't been an instance of 3 straight playoff shutouts since the 1905 World Series when New York's baseball Giants scored wins of 3-0 and 9-0 in games 1 and 3, and the Phillies took Game 2 by a 3-0 count. The Giants won the series, 4 games to 1.
The Yankees will give the ball to Gerrit Cole against the Royals' Michael Wacha.
