The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves split their doubleheader on Monday, leaving Arizona fans disappointed as the Diamondbacks needed one team to sweep the other. All three teams finished 89-73, but Arizona lost the head-to-head tiebreakers with New York and Atlanta.
"Arizona first baseman Christian Walker said, "It flat-out sucks." Walker contemplated how well he thought his team would have performed had they made their way into the playoffs, adding, "I felt like this team would have done something really special. It just wasn't quite good enough."
The fact is Arizona played its own way out of the postseason by dropping five of its last seven games.
In the first game on Monday, the Mets scored six runs in the eighth to go up 6-3, only to surrender four in the bottom of the inning before tallying two more in the top of the ninth for the 8-7 win. Atlanta took the second game 3-0, needing the win to move on.
The Braves take the second wild card spot and are the over-all 5-seed in the NL playoffs, while the Mets get the final spot as the over-all 6 seed.
