Each week during the 2022 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will be honored for outstanding defensive player. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch list.
Additionally, the Augusta Sports Council will announce the Ray Guy Award top punter each week .
USC quarterback Caleb Williams has been named Maxwell Award Player of the Week after leading the Trojans to a 41-28 win over the Stanford Cardinal. In game two of his sophomore campaign at USC, the 6-1, 215-pound quarterback went 20-27 for 341 passing yards with 4 TD. Williams’ performance helped the Trojans jump to #7 in this week’s AP Top 25 poll. Williams connected with his favorite target Jordan Addison for most of the day tallying 7 receptions for 182 yards and 2 TD’s. Williams on the Trojans win was quoted as saying, “all 11 guys on one page, everybody did his job,” which can be hoped for this weekend as the Trojans take on Fresno State this Saturday.
University of Arkansas linebacker Drew Sanders was named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week following Saturday’s 44-30 win over South Carolina. Sanders, the 6-5, 233-pound junior, recorded 11 tackles, 3.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a 1 pass breakup to add immense amounts of pressure to the Gamecock offense. Behind Sanders’ performance, the Razorbacks ranked #10 in this week’s AP Top 25 poll. Coach Pittman commented on Sanders’ growth since he transferred in from Alabama this spring by saying, “If you see today versus when he first came in the spring, you’d think you had two totally different people,” which creates a lot of faith for the Razorback’s linebacker in the future. Arkansas looks ahead this Saturday to their matchup with Missouri State in Fayetteville.
