LB Thomas of NC State Leads List of Five Weekly Award Winners

NOTE: Among other awards, CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove is a voter for the Maxwell, Bednarik, Ray Guy, and Lou Groza awards, and a nominating member of the Bronko Nagurski Award.

Each week during the 2022 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will be honored for outstanding defensive player. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch list.

Additionally, the Augusta Sports Council announces the Ray Guy Award top punter each week, the FWAA announces the weekly Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission recognizes top-placer kickers each week in contention for the Lou Groza Award.

Maxwell Award Player of the Week - QB CJ Stroud, Ohio State

The 6-3, 218-pound junior quarterback went 21-26 passes for 361 yards and 6 touchdowns, boosting the #3 Buckeyes to a 49-20 win over Michigan State. The performance by Stroud and the Buckeyes’ boosted the team to #2 in AP Top 25 rankings for Week 7. The Buckeyes head into a bye week before hosting Iowa on October 22nd..

Bednarik Award Defensive Player of the Week - CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

Mitchell intercepted four NIU passes, returning two of them for touchdowns that led the Rockets (4-2) to a 52-32 road win in DeKalb, Ill. and earned him the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honor for games during the weekend of Oct. 8, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.

The 6-0, 200-pound sophomore from Williston, Fla. had three interceptions by halftime, the first of which he scored with from 25 yards out to give Toledo at 14-0 lead. He took the second into the end zone as well, from 20 yards away three minutes before halftime. The third came in the final seconds before the half in Toledo’s end zone to thwart an NIU drive and preserve a 35-7 Toledo halftime advantage.

The last of Mitchell's four picks came on NIU’s opening drive of the second half. In all, four of NIU’s first seven possessions ended with a Mitchell interception and the interceptions were the first of Mitchell’s career.

Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week - CB Emmanuel Forbes, Mississippi State

Forbes intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter Saturday, taking the second one back 33 yards for a touchdown to seal Mississippi State’s 42-24 win over then-No. 17 Texas A&M.

Forbes is the FBS' active leader in career interceptions returned for touchdowns. His 10th and 11th career picks came on consecutive Texas A&M possessions in the middle of the final quarter right after the teams had traded touchdowns on four previous possessions. Forbes also blocked a Texas A&M field goal that created a 50-yard scoop-and-score.

Ray Guy Punter of the Week - Bryce Baringer, Michigan State

Baringer punted 7 times during the game against Ohio State for a total of 342 yards. His gross average was 48.86 and his net average was 48.71 yards due to him having only 1 punt returned for 1 yard. Five of his punts ended up inside Ohio State's 20-yard line and he had a long punt of 59 yards.

Lou Groza Award Recognizes Boise State's Dalmas, NC State's Dunn, and Tennessee's McGrath

Boise State junior Jonah Dalmas kicked four field goals in the Broncos’ 40-20 defeat of Fresno State in Mountain West action in Boise, Idaho on Saturday night. The 2021 Groza semifinalist from Meridian, Idaho had makes of 33, 21 and two from 24 yards out. He converted all four of his PATs for a 16-point game, tied for the most among kickers this week. It’s the 4th time in just 25 career games that he has made four field goals. Dalmas is 10-for-12 on field goals and 19-for-19 on extra point attempts this season, with his 49 points leading the team in scoring.

NC State graduate kicker Christopher Dunn scored the final 9 points of the game, including a 53-yard field goal, to lead the Wolfpack to a come-from-behind 19-17 victory over Florida State in ACC action in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday. In addition to that long-range kick, the Lexington, S.C. native connected from 40, 38, and the ultimate game-winner from 27 yards out. He made his only extra point attempt for a 13-point day. Dunn has not missed a kick this season, with his 11 field goal attempts tied for the most in the nation by a kicker still perfect. The fifth-year starter is the active FBS career leader in both field goals and kick-scoring.

Senior Chase McGrath was 4-for-5 on his field goal attempts in Tennessee’s 40-13 rout of LSU on the road in Baton Rouge, La. on Saturday. The Newport Beach, Calif. native connected from 38, 35 and twice from 32 yards out for his most makes as a Volunteer. His lone miss came from long distance, while he’s now 15-for-16 on tries from inside 40 yards at Tennessee. He made all four of his PATs to go to a perfect 94-for-94 at Tennessee, having made 164 in a row including his time at USC. The 16-point game is his best as a Vol and ties for the best by a kicker this week, while his 52 points lead the team in scoring.
