With the 2025 NFL draft drawing near, teams continue to scramble to fill their immediate needs with veterans. Many free agents remain unsigned, including Super Bowl winning quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, running back J.K. Dobbins, and receivers Stefon Diggs, Amari Cooper and Asante Samuel, Jr.
Rodgers was the MVP of Super Bowl XLV for the Green Bay Packers in the 2010-11 season and Russell Wilson won that award as the winning quarterback of Super Bowl XLVIII for the Seattle Seahawks to conclude the 2013-14 season.
Rodgers has been paid more than any other NFL player in history while ranking 7th on the all-time passing yards leader list with 62,952 yards. He has thrown 503 touchdown passes against just 116 interceptions. At the age of 41, he still managed to throw for 3,897 yards with 28 TD's and only 11 INT's in 2024 with the woeful Jets.
Wilson is five years younger than Rodgers. From the beginning of the 2012 season through October 7, 2021, he started 149 consecutive games for the Seahawks. That's the 7th-longest span in NFL history.
Buffalo Bills QB and 2024 league MVP Josh Allen holds the current lead with 117 straight starts to rank 13th on the all-time list. Allen (+550) is currently trailing only Lamar Jackson (+450) of Baltimore as 2025 NFL MVP odds favorites.
Meanwhile, NESN reports that wide receiver Stefon Diggs could be bring his talents, and penchant for drama, to the New England Patriots. The 32-year-old suffered an ACL injury in October but, if healthy, Diggs can be a tremendous asset. He had six straight seasons of at least 1,130 yards from 2018-2023 between Minnesota and Buffalo. He has amassed 10,491 yards in his career with 70 touchdowns.
Simultaneously, SI.com is reporting that Amari Cooper may more likely sign with the Pats over the New Orleans Saints who continue to target the veteran. Cooper has had stints with the Bills (2024), Browns (2022-24), Cowboys (2018-21) and Raiders (2015-18) and has accumulated 10,003 yards with 64 touchdowns with six seasons of at least 1,070 yards.
In January, the Patriots hired former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel to guide the team, an 8-year veteran player from 2001-2008 with the franchise. Vrabel replaces another former 8-year veteran player of the Patriots from 2008-2015, Jerod Mayo, who was 4-13 in his lone season as head coach in 2024. Vrabel was 56-48 with the Titans, including a 2-3 playoff mark.
New England has the 4th pick of the 1st round and likely hopes to clear Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter off the board. We suspect Hunter would ultimately play DB, but he could also have a package on offense that would give quarterback Derrick Maye an excellent extra weapon.
Some other free agents are being expected and rumored to be finding their likely landing places soon with a pair of Chargers leading the way. Running back J.K. Dobbins could wind up in Denver or Dallas, while Assante Samuel Jr. has been linked to the Saints.
The 2025 NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 24 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay and runs through Saturday, April 26.
