Michigan picked up 41 of 56 first-place votes and claimed the Wolverines' first No. 1 ranking in the history of the poll after defeating Iowa 26-0 in the Big Ten Championship. The poll is administered by the FWAA (Football Writers Association) and the National Football Foundation, and features a geographical mix 56 FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers. CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove has been a member of the panel since since week 4 of the 2017 season.

Alabama moved up for spots to No. 4 after defeating Georgia 27-24 in the SEC Championship. Georgia fell five spots to No. 6 by virtue of the three-point loss to the Crimson Tide, ending the Bulldogs' 23-week run as the nation's No. 1 team.
Florida State wound up at No. 5 after a narrow 16-6 win over Louisville in the ACC Championship game. The Cardinals remained No. 15 after the loss to the Seminoles.
Iowa dropped out of the poll completely after suffering a 26-point loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship game. Notre Dame returned to the poll claiming No. 16.
