FBS Recap: Miami Unbeaten No More; Ole Miss Topples Georgia; 'Bama Routs LSU

November 10, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Miami lost for the first time after spending too many weeks averting disaster. The 'Canes' fell 28-23 at Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech's win over Miami was its first over an undefeated team that was at least 9-0 since 2002, and just its second since 1936.

Miami's defeat means SMU (8-1, 5-0) has sole possession of first place in the ACC as the only remaining member without a conference loss. Clemson (7-2) is 6-1 in the ACC and Miami (9-1) is 5-1 in the conference. None of those three teams are scheduled to play each other during the regular season.

Miami was hoping to gain a measure of revenge for last year's 23-20 loss to Georgia Tech that came when the 'Canes were 4-0. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal is still trying to live down that defeat that happened due to poor decision-making that had  his team running the ball instead of going into victory formation with the win secured. Instead, Miami fumbled on a 3rd-and-10 run at the Georgia Tech 26 on a play that began with just 33 seconds left and the Jackets holding no time outs in their pocket. It took just 4 plays for the Yellow jackets on a 44-yard TD pass with 1 tick left on the clock.

This time, Miami was hoping to a pull of another late comeback win, but Cam Ward was strip-sacked at his own 19-yard line with a 1:30 to play. The 'Canes had scored a TD on their previous possession.

Here are the remaining four unbeatens with their schedule strength rank (out of 134 teams) in parenthesis, heading into this past Saturday's games:

Army (119)
BYU (50)
Indiana (62)
Oregon (27)

Army was a 14-3 winner at North Texas, BYU hit the GW field goal from 44 yards out with 4 seconds left to stun Utah 22-21, Indiana held off Michigan's upset bid for a 20-15 win at home, and Oregon rolled to a 39-18 win at home over Maryland.

Indiana is 10-0 for the first time in its history. It was just the 11th win for Indiana over Michigan out of 73 tries. The Hoosiers now get a week to prep for a trip to Ohio State which visits Northwestern next.

Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel became the first QB to have 20+ TD passes in five different seasons. He also set a new record of 180 'TD's responsible for' with 180, breaking the previous record held by Case Keenum at 178 (155 passing, 23 rushing) from 2007-2011, all at Houston. Gabriel has 147 passing, 32 rushing, and 1 receiving, compiling his marks during 3 seasons at UCF, 2 at Oklahoma and the current season at Oregon.

Elsewhere...

Georgia was dumped 28-10 at Ole Miss for the 'Dawgs first loss to a team not named 'Alabama' since 2000 (Florida), and it's the first time that Georgia has lost two games in the same season since that 2020 Covid campaign.

Alabama ended LSU head coach Brian Kelly's perfect record at LSU in home night games. He was 13-0 until the Tide rolled over the Tigers to the tune of 42-13. It was 42-6 before LSU scored a late TD with 11 seconds left.

Iowa State lost 45-36 at Kansas, leaving Colorado as the only 1-loss team in the Big 12. The Buffaloes (7-2, 5-1) are in solo second behind BYU (9-0, 6-0).

Florida State slumped to 1-9 with an embarrassing 52-3 loss at Notre Dame. FSU has been outscored 133-363. Throw in the Orange Bowl debacle as the last game of 2023, a 63-3 loss to Georgia, and the 'Noles have been outscored 136-426 in their last 11 games.

Air Force beat Fresno State 36-28 for its first Mountain West victory of the season (4-1), just its second win over-all (2-7), and its first over a FBS school in 2024. The other win came against FCS member Merrimack in the season opener.

FBS vs. FCS

No FBS vs. FCS games took place this past weekend.

FBS schools are 110-6 in such games this season. They are a cumulative 1,910-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there were 121 scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.

2024 FCS wins vs. FBS:
August 24: Montana State 35, New Mexico 31
September 7: St. Francis (PA) 23, Kent State 17
September 7: Idaho 17, Wyoming 13
September 7: Southern Utah 27, UTEP 24 (OT)
September 21: Monmouth 45, FIU 42
September 28: UT-Martin 24, Kennesaw 13

In 2023, FBS schools were 114-4. These were the FCS wins last year:
September 9: Idaho 33, Nevada 6
September 9: Southern Illinois 14, Northern Illinois 12
September 9: Fordham 40, Buffalo 37
September 16: Sacramento State 30, Stanford 23
