When Texas and Georgia met back on October 19, Texas was 6-0 and ranked No. 1, while Georgia was 5-1 and ranked 6th. The Longhorns were 3.5-point favorites in the sportsbooks for that Austin contest, and had a whopping 10.22-point computer advantage, according to the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com.
Georgia, which had already fallen 41-34 at Alabama in week four, dismissed the negativity and won that game 30-15. It remains the only loss for Texas all year while Georgia would go onto later lose convincingly, 28-10, at Ole Miss.
Well, here we are again.
The 'Horns and 'Dawgs will have their redeaux this coming Saturday in the SEC Championship game in Atlanta at 4 p.m. ET on ABC and Texas is once again favored, but not by nearly as much as episode 1 of this football wars adventure. This time around, Texas gets a modest 1.5-point edge on a somewhat neutral field (Atlanta is 72 miles from Athens) while the computer gives Steve Sarkisian's team a 4.07-point edge.
Because of Ohio State's fourth consecutive loss to Michigan, the 'Horns move up from 4th to 2nd in this week's computer rankings, and even leap-frog Notre Dame as the Irish stay put at No. 3. Texas was a 17-7 winner at Texas A&M while Notre Dame prevailed 49-35 at USC.
Neither Ohio State or Michigan will play in the B1G Championship game, and that hasn't happened since 2016 when Penn State toppled Wisconsin.
Instead, the Buckeyes, who drop from 2nd to 5th, will watch from afar and wait to see where they wind up in the College Football Playoff.
SMU rises to No. 6 this week after completing a perfect 8-0 ACC slate in the program's first year in the league after literally begging to get in. The 11-1 Mustangs had their only loss back on September 6 when they fell 18-15 at home to BYU. They will face a wounded, but refreshed, 9-3 Clemson team that lost 17-14 at home to South Carolina to seemingly fall out of this game. That was before Miami did the Tigers a favor and collapsed to a 42-38 loss at Syracuse after leading 21-0.
Clemson dropped from 13 to 16m, while the 'Canes plunged from 6th to 11th.
