FBS Computer Rankings / Weekend Recap: Oregon 1st, Penn State 2nd

October 27, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

After an emphatic 38-9 win at home over Illinois (6-2), No. 1 Oregon (8-0) holds onto the top spot of the computer rankings as 23 teams are still among last week's Top 25.

The Congrove Computer Rankings, developed in 1993 and online since 1999, are a recognized NCAA national champion selector of the FBS.

See all of the week's Picks, Scores and Final Odds.

Penn State (7-0) jumps Ohio State (8-1) and Texas (7-1) to land at No. 2, with the Buckeyes and Longhorns now following the Nittany Lions while Miami (8-0) leap-frogs idle Georgia (6-1) which slips to 6th.

Penn State was a 28-13 winner at Wisconsin, while Ohio State needed a goal line stand to hang on for a 27-24 home win over the same Nebraska (5-3) team that lost 56-7 at Indiana a week ago, and Miami was an easy-as-expected 36-14 home winner over Florida State.

The 'Noles fell to 1-7 with the loss and out of bowl consideration of any kind. They opened the season as a consensus favorite to make the expanded 12-team playoff as the ACC Champion.

Notre Dame (7-1) stays put at No. 7 after a 51-14 rout of then-No. 23 Navy in East Rutherford while the Midshipmen (6-1) fall to No. 27 after losing for the first time this season. Navy had 6 turnovers after previously given the ball away just twice all season, and not once in the previous five games.

Among the other idle teams were Iowa State (7-0), Clemson (6-1), Tennessee (6-1) and Army (7-0). The Cyclones and Tigers remain ranked 8th and 9th while the Vols move up from 11th to 10th, and Army rises from 21st to 19th.

Ole Miss (6-2) drops from 10th to 12th, despite a 26-14 home win over Oklahoma (4-4).

Indiana (8-0) rises from 13th to 11th after a 31-17 win at home over Washington (4-4). It was declared Lee Corso Day in Bloomington, in honor of the Hoosiers' former head coach who was on the set of ESPN's College GameDay and, naturally, picked his old team to win.

Texas A&M (7-1) rises from 15th to 13th with its 38-23 win at home over LSU. The Aggies rode 3 INT's of Garret Nussmeier to a 31-6 second half after trailing 17-7 at the break. Marcel Reed replaced Conner Weigman at QB after the break and only threw 2 passes, completing both. But, he had an 8-yard TD run on his first play, and led the team to four touchdowns and a field goal on their next five drives. Reed finished with 3 rushing scores. LSU dropped from 12th to 20th after six of its seven second-half possessions resulted in one TD, four turnovers, a punt and a failed 4th down conversion.

BYU (8-0) was a confounding 2.5-point underdog at UCF (3-5), but notched a 37-24 victory in Orlando and moves up from 16th to 14th.

Alabama (6-2) inches up from 17th to 15th as the Tide scored a 34-0 knockout of Missouri (6-2). The Tigers fall from 20th to 25th in the computer ranking of all 134 FBS teams.

SMU (7-1) slips from 14th to 16th. The Mustangs did everything the could to give Duke the home win, but the Blue Devils got refused to take it and fell to 6-2. SMU became the first team since 2011 to lose the turnover battle 6-0 and win the game. @CBSSports Research points out the last team to do that was Marshall when the Herd (another school with a horse nickname) won 23-22 at Memphis. The last turnover was a fumble that set up Duke for a walk-off 30-yard field goal at the end of a regulation, but that was blocked. The Blue Devils also missed an earlier FG try and a PAT. SMU took a 28-21 lead on the second play of overtime and Duke answered to make it 28-27. But with no faith left in the kicking game, head coach Manny Diaz opted to go for two and the rollout pass sailed over the intended target's head to secure the improbable win for SMU.

Boise State (6-1) was a 29-24 winner at UNLV (6-2) on Friday night and moves up one spot to 17th. The Broncos lead 19th-ranked Army (7-0), No. 22 Memphis (7-1) and No. 23 Tulane (6-2) as the top team from a non-Power Four conference.

Kansas State (7-1) moves from 19th to 18th by winning the Sunflower Showdown, 29-27, at home over Kansas (2-6). It's the 16th straight win for the Wildcats over the Jayhawks. A late Kansas fumbled thwarted the upset bid as it turned into a Chris Tennant 51-yard field goal for Kansas State and the eventual final score. The giveaway came just two plays after Kansas State had turned the ball over on downs.

Pittsburgh (7-0) surprisingly isn't found until the No. 21 spot and moves up from 25th after Thursday's 41-13 home win over Syracuse (5-2).

Pitt is among four ACC teams that are undefeated in conference play. Virginia Tech (5-3, 2-1) is the only league team with just 1 conference loss and that came on the controversial replay reversal of what appeared to be the game-winning walk-off Hail Mary TD at Miami.

Over-all, eight teams remain undefeated - Oregon, Penn State, Miami, Iowa State, Indiana, BYU, Army, and Pitt.

Navy was not the only team to enter the weekend with a perfect mark and lose. The biggest upset of the week was previously unbeaten Liberty falling 27-24 at Kennesaw to give the Owls their first victory as a FBS program.

FBS vs. FCS

One such game took place next week when Wagner visited UMassand the Minutemen prevailed, 35-7.

FBS schools are 109-6 in such games this season, and a collective 1,909-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there are 121 scheduled scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.
