NOTE: Among other awards, CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove is a voter for the Maxwell, Bednarik and Ray Guy awards, and a nominating member of the Bronko Nagurski Award.
Each week during the 2022 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will be honored for outstanding defensive player. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch list.
Additionally, the Augusta Sports Council will announce the Ray Guy Award top punter each week and the FWAA announces the weekly Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.
UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been named Maxwell Award Player of the Week after propelling the Bruins to a big win over #15 Washington 40-32. The 6-1, 205-pound senior quarterback was the definition of a dual threat in this week’s action. Thompson-Robinson went 24-of-33 passes for 315 yds, and 3 touchdowns, while tacking on another 53 yards on the ground and another touchdown. Thompson-Robinson and the #18 Bruins look to keep their undefeated season alive as they host #11 Utah on Saturday.
University of Utah defensive back Clark Phillips was named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week following Saturday’s 42-16 win over Oregon State. The 5-10, 183-pound sophomore paved the way for the Utes recording three tackles, and three of Utah’s four total interceptions in the game, including one pick-six for 38 yards. Phillips is currently tied for first nationally with four interceptions on the season. Phillips and the #11 Utes look forward to a high-powered matchup on this road this Saturday at #18 UCLA.
The Augusta Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award are proud to announce Mason Fletcher of Cincinnati as the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week for Week 5 games. Fletcher was chosen from Ray's 8 that also included Adam Korsak of Rutgers, Andy Vujnovich of Wisconsin, Ethan Duane of ODU, Jack Browning of San Diego State, Jay Bramblett of LSU, Tom Hutton of Oklahoma State, and Oscar Chapman of Auburn.
Fletcher punted 6 times during the game against Tulsa for a total of 264 yards. His gross average was 44 and his net average was 44.67 yards due to him having only 2 punts returned for -4 yards. Three of his punts ended up inside Tulsa's 20-yard line and he had a long punt of 45 yards.
Forbes intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter Saturday, taking the second one back 33 yards for a touchdown to seal Mississippi State’s 42-24 win over then-No. 17 Texas A&M.
Forbes is the FBS' active leader in career interceptions returned for touchdowns. His 10th and 11th career picks came on consecutive Texas A&M possessions in the middle of the final quarter right after the teams had traded touchdowns on four previous possessions. Forbes also blocked a Texas A&M field goal that created a 50-yard scoop-and-score.
