Thankfully, the United Football League (UFL) gives us an opportunity to keep watching live football action in the spring.
We are two weeks out from the 2025 NFL Draft where Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter is now listed at +2000, trailing only Miami quarterback Cam Ward (-20000), as the odds-on favorite to be taken first. The Colorado duo of friends Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders have the third- and fourth-best odds, respectively, with Hunter at +5000 and Sanders at +6500. Shilo Sanders is expected to be, at best, a 7th-round pick.
This past weekend's UFL action saw four close games that ended with a split for the home and away teams. While the league was no longer competing with the NCAA basketball men's and women's championship tournaments, it had fierce competition for ratings from one of golf's Holy Grail tournaments, The Masters. The league was also up against college football spring games on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the league's home attendance leader, St. Louis came up short against the invaders from DC, dropping a 27-15 contest between two of the league's three teams that were undefeated when the weekend began. A crowd of 30,014 witnessed the home team battle down to the wire, but the Defenders tacked on a touchdown with 26 seconds left to play to pull away and secure the win..
Obviously, the Defenders improved to 3-0 with the win while the Battlehawks fell to 2-1. DC now has the solo lead in the XFL Conference after Arlington also dropped a game for the first time this season, falling 10-9 in a Friday night heartbreaker for the Renegades at Birmingham. The Stallions, who are the three-time defending spring football champions and have won 10 straight at home games, can't draw a crowd at home as only 10,126 showed up for this one. Birmingham is 34-5 over the last 3+ seasons of spring ball with a pair of USFL titles preceding last year's inaugural UFL championship victory.
Birmingham's 10-9 win came when quarterback Matt Corral connected with Cade Johnson on a 20-yard touchdown pass with just 26 seconds left in the game. Corral's two-yard keeper for the one-point conversion gave the Stallions the eventual winning score.
Following the close encounter on Friday night, Saturday's lone contest witnessed a clash between two winless clubs as Houston went to Memphis and stopped off the Showboats on a late comeback attempt. The Roughnecks preserved the 18-17 win and stopped their 8-game losing streak by halting a 2-point conversion attempt after Memphis pulled within 1 on a 4-yard scramble by backup QB Troy Williams with 18 seconds left.
Sunday's Michigan home game with San Antonio went to the Panthers who took the lead by the eventual 26-23 final score on a 28-yard field goal off the foot of B.T. Potter with 54 seconds left in the game. Kellen Mond responded for San Antonio by leading the Brahmas into field goal range, but a 53-yard walk-off attempt by Donald De La Haye was left of the target.
Total attendance across four games in week 3 was 55,906, which was down from last week's cumulative count of 64,888. Without a home game for St. Louis in week one, the league saw just 33,868 show up.
