Congrove's Personal Top 10, And Some Thoughts

September 27, 2020 by Staff

Clemson stays No. 1 in Congrove's personal top ten after week 4 of the college football season, with Alabama hot on the Tigers' heels. Meanwhile, another Tigers team, fell out of his rankings while Oklahoma took a plunge.

Dave Congrove's proprietary algorithm forms the basis of the Congrove Computer Rankings on CollegeFootballPoll.com, but he also has his own idea of how the teams should be ranked.

He typically gets to share his opinion as a regular voter in the FWAA Super 16 Poll, but that poll is currently on hiatus. Thus, here is Congrove's personal top ten.

Note: The list below is in order of Congrove's own rankings, with the ranking of his computer formula in parenthesis: Keep in mind that the computer rankings include all of the Big Ten teams, but his rankings below only include those teams that have now played at least 1 game.

1) Clemson (2)

2) Alabama (1)

3) Notre Dame (6)

4) Georgia  (12)

5) Florida (11)

6) Miami (NR)

7) Oklahoma State (16)

8) Virginia Tech (10)

9) Auburn (15)

10) Oklahoma (22)

Note: Texas A&M (5) and LSU (9) dropped out.

Congrove's Thoughts On....

... His own Top 10:

"After the top three above, I am convinced of nothing. This may be the hardest top ten that I've ever tried to construct. And while I don't have a Group of Five conference team in my Top Ten, I am keeping an eye on Cincinnati and UCF. I can already tell that the Knights are way better than I thought they would be after so many players opted out."

... Who's best in the SEC :

"I've said all along that LSU was poised to likely lose 4 games with all the NFL draft departures, opt-outs and new OC and DC. The bad news for their fans is that I didn't think for a minute that Mississippi State would be one of those losses so now they're obviously looking at the potential of losing 5. Alabama is the cream of the crop, followed in some order by Florida and Georgia.  Don't shut the door on Auburn, either. And look for Mississippi State to do much better than expected - especially if quarterback K.J. Costello continues to be that lethal in Mike Leach's system."

... Clemson and Notre Dame:

"Like Alabama, these two schools have just been toying with us. Especially Clemson. Dabo's stars haven't even broken a sweat in lopsided wins over Wake and The Citadel. Clemson was idle last week and draws Virginia at home this week. Notre Dame is off for a couple of weeks after having to cancel this past weekend's game at Wake due to Covid."

... The Big 12:

"What a mess. A Kansas State team that lost to Arkansas State just thumped Oklahoma, the conference's consensus front-runner. And that comes after the Big 12 went 0-3 vs. the Sun Belt a couple of weeks ago, and after Oklahoma State had a hard time putting away Tulsa. I might have to start thinking about Baylor possibly winning this conference.".

... Miami:

"Yes, I am going to buy-in to the Hurricanes. Not that Florida State is any good (They're not. They're awful). But Miami is dangerous. You can just see it. I now have them above Virginia Tech as I'm not sure the Hokies have the weapons to deal with them (they might). Virginia Tech  looked very good on Saturday against N.C. State."
