Congrove's Personal Top 10, And a Nickel's Worth Of Thoughts

September 20, 2020 by Staff

Clemson stays No. 1 in Congrove's personal top ten after week 3 of the college football season, with Alabama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Texas A&M staying put at 2-through-5.

There aren't, in fact, any changes in his top 10.

Dave Congrove's proprietary algorithm forms the basis of the Congrove Computer Rankings on CollegeFootballPoll.com, but he also has his own idea of how the teams should be ranked.

He typically gets to share his opinion as a regular voter in the FWAA Super 16 Poll, but that poll is currently on hiatus. Thus, here is Congrove's personal top ten.

Note: The list below is in order of Congrove's own rankings, with the ranking of his computer formula in parenthesis:

1) Clemson (2)

2) Alabama (1)

3) Oklahoma (5)

4) Notre Dame (4)

5) Texas A&M (6)

6) Georgia (9)

7) Oklahoma State (12)

8) Tennessee (10)

9) LSU (3)

10) Virginia Tech (7)

Note: The computer has Florida at No. 8.

Congrove's Thoughts On....

... SEC beginning play:

"This week, we will finally get to see how the SEC teams have prepared and whether or not  our notions are correct. Is Alabama the team to beat? Will LSU even remotely resemble last years' squad after so many departures?"

... Clemson and Notre Dame

"Those two schools have just been toying with us. Especially Clemson. Dabo's stars haven't even broken a sweat in lopsided wins over Wake and The Citadel. Clemson is idle this coming week so the coaches and players can also observe 'Bama and others."

...  The Big 12:

"Everyone thought Oklahoma State was a legitimate Big 12 title contender, but the Cowboys were pokey coming out of the gate. The 16-7 win at home over Tulsa could've been a loss if the Golden Hurricane hadn't been victimized by their own mistakes.Tulsa limited the damage from Chuba Hubbard and none of the OSU quarterbacks looked very threatening. The conference should come down to the Red River Rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas.

... Miami

"I naturally wasn't impressed with the win over UAB, but the win over Louisville was fairly impressive. Before going too crazy on the 'Canes, keep in mind we haven't see Virginia Tech yet."

... Florida State:

"A loss in week 1, and now Mike Norvell is isolated after testing positive for the virus. Just in time for the team to travel to Miami without him. This is not the way the Seminole faithful wanted this season to start."

... The Big Ten:

"Still wish they had sat out the Fall 'cus I just think it would have been cool to have some spring football. Now, I expect the PAC-12 to stick with its new plans to get going by October 31, and for the MAC to jump in as well. No idea where the Mountain West sits in all of this."
