Clemson stays No. 1 in Congrove's personal top ten after week 6 of the college football season, but he swaps Georgia for Notre Dame at No. 3, and moves Oklahoma State up from 7th to 5th by attrition.
Dave Congrove's proprietary algorithm forms the basis of the Congrove Computer Rankings on CollegeFootballPoll.com, but he also has his own idea of how the teams should be ranked.
He typically gets to share his opinion as a regular voter in the FWAA Super 16 Poll, but that poll is currently on hiatus. Thus, here is Congrove's personal top ten.
Note: The list below is in order of Congrove's own rankings, with the ranking of his computer formula in parenthesis: Keep in mind that the computer rankings include all of the Big Ten teams, but his rankings below only include those teams that have been playing games.
1) Clemson (2)
2) Alabama (1)
3) Georgia (9)
4) Notre Dame (6)
5) Oklahoma State (15)
6) Texas A&M (14)
7) Florida (15)
8) North Carolina (16)
9) Virginia Tech (8)
10) Tennessee (17)
Note: Miami (6) dropped out.
... defense:
"Clearly, Covid has had more effect on defense. Multiple teams say they didn't even get a chance to have live tackling in practice, so these players are pulling almost solely from their experience. Shootouts are fun but, hopefully the "D" improves as the season moves on.
.... Kiffin vs. Saban:
"That game was fun to watch, Kiffin gave his old boss a run for his money. Lane also showed how much he has grown up."
.... SEC:
"It's beginning to look a lot like an Alabama-Georgia title game is in the offing. Alabama already sat alone atop the western half, and now the Bulldogs sit by themselves above the eastern division field. And at this point, I would have to say Georgia looks to be the best in the conference.
... Anticipation of the Big Ten's return:
"I am very curious to see if my algorithm's prediction pans out for Wisconsin, not Ohio State, winning the conference."
... The Big 12:
Your trio at the top is still Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Iowa State. The Wildcats and Cyclones won n Saturday while the Cowboys had the week off. All three are undefeated in conference play, Only two other Bug 12 schools have fewer than 2 conference losses."
... North Carolina:
"The Tar Heels outscored Virginia Tech 56-45 and that seems nice on paper. But Virginia Tech had a solid reason for its defense to be absent - it truly was absent, thanks to Covid. UNC had no such excuse. North Carolina could be a very solid team if the defense can be shored-up. The offense has everything it needs."
