Congrove Computer Rankings - Michigan, Cincinnati 1-2

December 5, 2021 by Staff

Michigan ascends to No. 1 after a 42-3 destruction of Iowa in the Big Ten Championship game while Georgia was knocked off the lofty perch via a 41-24 loss to Alabama in the SEC title affair.

Cincinnati held steadfast at No. 2 with its 35-20 victory over Houston in the American Conference championship.

Georgia, based on an entire season's body of work, is ranked ahead of Alabama by a mere 0.03 ratings points. Georgia's lone loss was (obviously) to a top 4 team while Alabama's lone loss came against a Texas A&M squad that finished 8-4 and is ranked 26th by the computer.

Notre Dame is the first team out, followed by Ohio State.

Oklahoma State fell to 7th with Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and Louisiana rounding out the top 10.

Utah jumps from 15 to 11 by whacking Oregon for a second time in 3 weeks.

Baylor bumped up from 15 to 12, still significantly behind the Oklahoma State team it defeated. Again, it's a matter of a season's worth of results. Both the Cowboys and Bears have 2 losses but OSU's SOS is 27 vs. Baylor's SOS of 47. Baylor's first loss was to a TCU team that is ranked 87th and finished 5-7. The Cowboys' other loss was to an Iowa State team that is ranked 37th and finished 7-5.

The latest Congrove Computer Rankings were released at 2:37 a.m. on Sunday on CollegeFootballPoll.com. The rankings are an officially recognized NCAA championship selector.

Our best guess for the Playoff Committee's Final Four is 1) Michigan, 2) Alabama, 3) Cincinnati, 4) Georgia to set up semifinal games of Michigan vs. Georgia and Alabama vs. Cincinnati.
