Usually odds are posted with a negative number indicating the favorite (giving points). However, on this chart a negative number indicates the UNDERDOG.
PICK is the current projected spread.
TREND is a weighted difference between preseason expectations to now.
For instance, Michigan is currently favored by the computer algorithm by 5.83 (PICK). But the difference between Alabama and Michigan's power ratings has narrowed since the preseason (TREND) so the trend line is Michigan by just 0.29.
The trend line increases Texas' advantage over Washington from 4.82 to a whopping 12.84.
We have no record-keeping that indicates the trend line outperforms the current algorithm pick, or vice-versa. We tend to believe that if the 'pick' and the 'trend' support each other, then it is likely a more accurate prediction. For example, Boise State as a 1.93-point pick and a 3.47-point trend.
Please know that neither the pick nor the trend is affected by end-of-season coaching changes, or roster issues as a result of player opt-outs and injuries.
