Even after the emergence of the National Football League in 1920, college football remained extremely popular, and it has continued to be so right through to the modern day. Over the decades, college football has seen an array of super-talented players. But who are the very best? Although that question is up for debate, we are sure you will not disagree that the following three players deserve their places as the greatest college footballers of all time.
Seeing as Bo Jackson is the only professional athlete to have been named an All-Star in both football and baseball, he is undoubtedly one of the greatest multiple-sports talents of all time. But his football career stats alone are impressive enough for him to have received a reputation as one of the best footballers. He proved just how hot he was when he played for Auburn University in the early 1980s. The New York Yankees had selected Jackson in the 1982 Major League Baseball draft’s second round. But he decided to attend Auburn on a football scholarship instead. He did so because he wanted to show his mother that he would be the first in the family to attend a major college. Jackson had no regrets in his decision. Playing for the Auburn Tigers, Jackson ran 4,303 career yards. That was the fourth-best in the history of the Southeastern Conference. And Jackson won the Heisman Trophy in 1985. The football star then went on to play in the National Football League for the Los Angeles Raiders.

Herschel Walker played college football for the University of Georgia as a running back, where he earned All-American honors three times. Walker also won the Heisman Trophy in 1982. He is the only player in NCAA history to finish in the top three in the Heisman voting throughout all three of his college years. Walker is also the first player to play three college years and finish in the top ten on rushing yards. The only other footballer to have achieved that feat is Jonathan Taylor. And without Herschel Walker, the University of Georgia may not have won the national championship against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.
In 1999, Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever players seen in the history of college football.
Most fans and pundits consider Jim Brown to be the greatest professional football player of all time. But before he was setting records as a fullback with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL, he was one of the hottest stars of college football.
As a sophomore at Syracuse University in 1954, Jim Brown was the team’s second-leading rusher. As a junior, he rushed for 666 yards. By his senior year in 1956, he was an integral part of the first team. With an average of 6.2 rushes, he set the record for the highest rush average of the season and the record for scoring the most touchdowns in a single game, with six. He also ran for 986 yards and scored 14 touchdowns throughout his Syracuse games. And those stats are just getting started! For instance, he wasn’t just a star of football. He also excelled in basketball, track, and lacrosse at college. And as a sophomore, Brown was the second highest-leading scorer with 15 ppg. As a senior, he was named a first-team All-American in Lacrosse. Today, Brown can be found in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Brown has, of course, also been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
