After a wonderful college football weekend that saw a few upsets and a lot of wild finishes, see how your team stacks up in the latest Congrove Computer Rankings, released Sunday.
Among the highlights, on the field and in the rankings, was Texas A&M's rebound from a 52-24 loss to Alabama and a 9-psot drop in the rankings from 8 to 17. Yesterday, the Aggies knocked off Florida 41-38 and moved up to No. 14. Florida fell from 11th to 15th.
Virginia Tech has had 15 or more players missing, and up to 4 coaches not on the sidelines, due to Covid-releated issues on each and every game. Yet, the Hokies are still 2-1. They lost 56-45 at North Carolina yesterday, clearly depleted on the defensive side of the ball, and they drop this week from No. 9 to No. 13 while the Tar Heels rise from 18th to 16th.
Oklahoma and Texas staged a crazy 4-vertime Red River Rivalry game with the Sooners prevailing 53-45. Oklahoma came into this game on its first two-game losing streak since 2014. Now, the Longhorns have lost two straight. The Sooners moved up from No. 31 to No. 27 while the Longhorns dropped from 22nd to 39th.
Hurricane Delta forced LSU's home game vs. Missouri to be moved to the Mizzou campus where the defending national champions fell 45-41 for their second loss of the season. LSU had first-and-goal at the 1 in the waning seconds and were stopped on 4 straight plays. Missouri opened the season with tough battles against Alabama and Tennessee and lost both, but new head coach Eliah Dinkwitz pocketed a big win with this victory. LSU fell from 16th ton 23rd with the loss while Missouri rose from 57 to 52.
Georgia used a strong second half to dismiss Tennessee in a key eastern division affair in the Southeastern Conference. After trailing 21-17 at the half, the 'Dawgs shutout the Vols 27-0 over the final two quarters. Georgia inched up from 10th to 9th while Tennessee slipped from 12th to 17th.
Alabama continues to hold the top spot, followed by Clemson, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State to round out the top 5 for the second week in-a-row.
Spots 6 through 10 are taken, in order, by Notre Dame, Minnesota, Indiana, Georgia and Michigan.
Big Ten teams won't begin play until October 24, but UMass plays its first, and so far only, game scheduled next Saturday and has been added to the rankings. The Minutemen check in at No. 84 out of 92 teams.
The rankings are dominated by Power 5 conference schools with the Big Ten holding 6 of the top 10 slots, while the SEC has 5 members in the top 17, but only 2 in the top 13.
Two programs from the ACC are ranked among the top 6, bow the number of programs in the top 25 fell from 6 a week ago to 4 this week.
The Big 12 has 1 team in the top 26 with Oklahoma State at No. 12.
American conference member Cincinnati continues to be the highest-ranked program from the Group of Five conferences at No. 19. The highest-ranked independent is BYU at No. 25.
Louisiana-Lafayette is the highest-ranked Sun Belt school at No. 29, while Conference USA brings up the rear of the conferences with Marshall leading the way at No. 31.
The PAC-12, Mountain West and MAC will be added to the rankings soon. Each of those conferences joined the Big Ten in opting back in to the Fall season. The Mountain West joins the Big Ten with an Oct. 24 start date. while the MAC will kick off Nov. 4 with mid-week games and the PAC-12 beginsplay on Nov. 7.
UConn, Old Dominion and New Mexico State remain out of the picture and have no plans to resurrect their programs for 2020.
