College Football Playoff Selection Committee Issues Fifth Rankings of 2024

The fifth and penultimate rankings of 2024 have been released by the College Football Playoff Committee with losses by then by No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Miami, and No .12 Clemson shaking up the top 12.

Oregon, the only team in the FBS to finish the regular season with an unblemished record, remains top dog -- er, duck.

Ohio State fell from 2 to 6 after losing to Michigan, while Miami dropped from 6 to 12, and Clemson was dropped from 12 to 17.

Texas, Penn State and Notre Dame each moved up a spot to 2nd, 3rd and 4th, while Georgia rose from 7 to 5.

Tulane (17), Texas A&M (20) and Kansas State (24) fell out while Syracuse (22), Army (24) and Memphis (25) took their places.

Playoff Pairings after Week 5

The playoff will consist of 11 games with 4 first-round games, 4 quarterfinal games, 2 semifinal games and, finally, the CFP Championship

Here's where the playoff already gets a bit strange. The four first-round games will be played at the home stadium of the 5th-8th seeds. The 1st-thru-4th seeds get a bye, but they never get a home game.

The four second-round games will be played at bowl locations, as follows:

The CFP Championship will take place in Atlanta on Monday, January 20

About the College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff (CFP) is the event that crowns the national champion in college football. The CFP Selection Committee ranks the top 25 teams at the end of the season. The 12 playoff participants consist of the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and receive a first-round bye. The schools seeded five through eight will host those seeded nine through 12 in first-round games. The quarterfinals and semifinals rotate annually among six bowl games – the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, VRBO Fiesta Bowl, Capital One Orange Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential and the Allstate Sugar Bowl. This year's quarterfinals will take place on December 31, 2024 and January 1, 2025, while the semifinals will be January 9-10, 2025. The College Football Playoff National Championship will be Monday, January 20, 2025, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
