Will Aaron Rodgers be Pittsburgh's quarterback in 2025?
All signs indicate Aaron Rodgers will put off retirement and sign with 'someone' in 2025. Mike Moraitis at the SportingNews.com points out that the 'someone' that's left is the Pittsburgh Steelers. But Mike Farabaugh of PennLive writes today that Rodgers doesn't want to play in Pittsburgh and would rather be with the Vikings, according to Mike Florio of PFT.
Within the last few days, former Steelers QB Russel Wilson was signed by the Giants to a 1-year deal for $10.5 million where he joins Jameis Winston who inked a deal for two years worth $8 million with roughly $3 mil put to 2025 and $5 mil to 2026. Wilson is 36. Winston is 31.
The Steelers currently have just Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on their roster. In March, Rudolph was re-signed with a two-year $8 million contract deal. Thompson has a one-year deal for $1.1 mil.
Wilson started 11 games for the Steelers in 2025 after missing the first five weeks with a re-aggravated calf injury. The QB has a 199-199 record in regular season games, including 6-5 a year ago when he was 6-1 in his first 7 starts before finishing with 4 straight losses. That losing streak dropped the team down to Wild Card status behind the Ravens who handed Pittsburgh a 34-17 loss in Baltimore on December 21, and then unceremoniously ejected them from the playoffs with a 28-14 decision in Baltimore on January 11.
Justin Fields was 3-2 in the first five games of the Steelers' 2024 season, winning his first three before dropping his last to starts to open the door farther for Wilson to step back in. Fields was signed to the New York Jets on March 13th for $40 million over two years. He has already been deemed the starting QB for the upcoming season.
The Steelers pick 21st in this year's draft and lost their second-round pick when they traded it to Seattle for receiver DK Metcalf. The 2019 draft pick was taken by the Seahawks out of Ole Miss in the second round. Metcalf became a starter in his rookie season and would go on to start 93 games in Seattle (including playoffs) where he caught 464 balls for 6,775 yards with 53 touchdowns.

The Steelers odds of winning the 2025 Super Bowl have increased considerably since the above article was posted on February 29 when those odds (+8000) were just the 23rd-best of the 32 teams. The franchise is still looking to return for the first time since dropping XLV (45) to the Green Bay Packers in Arlington. The last Super Bowl was XLIII at the end of the 2008 season under Ben Roethlisberger who retired in 2021. Since then, Pittsburgh has had starts from Rudolph, Mitchell Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Fields and Wilson.
So again we ask, will Aaron Rodgers be Pittsburgh's quarterback in 2025? It depends on who you're asking, or what the Magic 8-ball says. For now, you will just have to stay tuned for the breaking news out of the Steel City.
