NOTE: CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove is a voting member of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards
Each week during the 2020 season the Maxwell Football Club recognizes outstanding individual performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will honor overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will honor outstanding defensive play. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch lists.
DeVonta Smith – WR – Alabama
There is no stopping No. 6… certainly not at this level. Smith once again showed why he’s the nation’s premier pass-catcher, vexing a talented LSU secondary with a dizzying array of precise routes, explosive plays and acrobatic grabs. Alabama convincingly avenged last year’s loss to the Tigers, 55-17, with Smith parlaying eight receptions into 231 yards and three touchdowns. His big performance against the Tigers has earned him the nod as Maxwell Award Player of the Week.
Nate Landman - LB - Colorado
With two weekends left in the regular season, Colorado is undefeated and the play of the linebackers is a huge reason why. Coordinator Tyson Summers is getting maximum production from the second level, specifically Landman and Carson Wells. In Saturday’s win over Arizona, the former had 16 tackles, including 12 solos, 3.5 stops for loss and a sack. Through four games, Landman already has 53 tackles. His outstanding defensive effort earned him recognition as the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week.
A week ago, Landman was the Nagurski defensive player of the week for his 10 solos and 11 total tackles, along with 4 TFL's as Colorado handled San Diego State 20-10 in a hastily-scheduled non-conference game.
