Alabama remained atop the first-regular season NFF-FWAA Super 16 Poll after dismantling Miami (FL) last Saturday. Fellow Southeastern Conference power Georgia jumped four spots to No. 2 after beating then-2nd Clemson in a defensive struggle in Charlotte.
A panel of 52 FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers vote in the poll. Voters were selected to create a balanced-geographical perspective and include CollegeFootballPoll.com's Dave Congrove.
Alabama received 46 of the 52 first-place votes, up 11 from the 35 the Tide received in the preseason poll on August 19. Georgia picked up the other six.
Three of the top five teams in the poll are from the SEC, including No. 5 Texas A&M.
The other major development was Penn State entering the poll at No. 10 after upsetting Wisconsin in Madison in a key early-season Big Ten matchup. North Carolina, No. 9 a week ago, dropped out of the poll after losing at unranked Virginia Tech.
Wisconsin, LSU (after falling at UCLA) and Miami (FL) also dropped out of the poll. Besides Penn State, other new teams in the poll are Iowa, UCLA and Texas.
The SEC led all conferences with four teams, followed by the Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 with three each. The ACC, American and Independents had one apiece.
The poll returns in 2021 after a one-year hiatus in 2020, due to Covid.
Voters rank the top 16 teams in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and the results will be released every Sunday of the 2021 season.
Congrove's ballot ranked Alabama No. 1, followed by 2) Texas A&M, 3) USC, 4) Ohio State, 5) Oklahoma, 6) Penn State, 7) UCLA, 8) NC State, 9) Georgia, 10) Clemson, 11) Iowa, 12) Iowa State, 13) Cincinnati, 14) Virginia Tech, 15) Notre Dame and 16) Utah.
